Job Description
NREL is seeking to hire a researcher to conduct cutting-edge research in the areas of concentrating solar power (CSP) collectors. The candidate will work with other engineers and scientists in the Thermal Energy Systems Group, within the Energy Conversion and Storage Systems Center (ECaSS) Center. The thermal energy systems group is focused on concentrating solar thermal technologies, thermal energy hybridization systems, and thermal energy storage systems.
The candidate will conduct researcher and development of CSP collectors including heliostats, parabolic trough, linear Fresnel and dish. Specifically, we are looking for a qualified candidate who would
  • Possess fundamental knowledge in solar optics including geometric optics, mirror specularity and opto-mechanical error of solar collectors.
  • Possess fundamental knowledge in solar collector design and quality assurance.
  • Capable of ray-tracing modeling
- Capable of conducting annual technical performance of solar collectors and solar collector fields - Capable of conducting life-cycle economic analysis of a CSP collector system for energy production
  • Capable of interpreting experimental measurement results of solar collector into technical and economic models
  • Demonstrate strong technical leadership through publishing high impact journal papers and proposal development

Basic Qualifications
For Researcher IV Level
Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience .

For Researcher III Level
Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience .

Additional Required Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous industrial experience related to CSP applications
  • Possess practical experiences in developing optical metrology tools for CSP collectors such as deflectometry and photogrammetry
  • Possess practical experiences in optimizing solar collector systems for industrial process heat system, fuel generation or electricity generation.
  • Able and willing to quickly adapt into related technical research areas as projects and programs need.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher IV / Annual Salary Range: $93,100 - $167,600
Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $77,600 - $139,700
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
