  • Pay rate set hourly at $120 / Hr.

POSITION SUMMARY

Provides patient care, identifying and implementing nursing interventions, and evaluating outcomes. This position holder is responsible for behaviors and functions identified in essential duties, assumes ongoing competency, and participates in quality improvement. Care is provided to all ages with problems ranging from simple, non-urgent to complex, life-threatening conditions. All documentation, tracking and aftercare is electronic and computer-based.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education or Formal Training

Special Qualifications (Licensure, Registration, etc.)

  • Colorado Nursing License in good standing
  • Certifications required before end of conditional period; suspension if certification lapses:
    • BLS certification - Employees hired prior to 3/6/15 must have current BLS by 12/31/15.
  • ACLS certification
  • PALS or ENPC certification
  • TNCC certification within 6 months of hire, or upon the expiration of the current certification.
  • NIHSS certification required by 12/31/17and within 6months of hire.
  • Certification recommended:
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Program desirable
  • CEN – Certification for Emergency Nursing – desirable

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

  • Demonstrated physical and mental ability to apply nursing theories, procedures and emergency nursing standards to clinical practice
  • Critical Care monitoring skills: cardiac monitoring, respiratory assessment and management, trauma specific assessment and procedures
  • Computer and keyboard skills are desirable

Experience

  • Experienced ED RN required, level III Trauma or higher.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

  • Physical working environment may include, but not be limited to, any of the following hazards: chemical, electrical, mechanical, biowaste, explosive, radiation, etc.
  • Environmental conditions may include, but not be limited to, variations in temperature, noise, odors, etc.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to constantly stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to stoop, crouch and twist. The employee is occasionally required to kneel, squat and sit.
  • The employee must be able to consistently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 10 pounds, frequently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 30 pounds and occasionally support, push, pull and/or transfer up to 50 pounds (for example, moving a patient from a wheelchair to a bed).
  • Functional physical demands include manual dexterity, fine motor skills and reaching. The following senses will be needed for essential duties of the job: speech, vision, hearing, smell and touch.

Delegates to and supervises care of trauma techs and volunteers

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assessment. ED nurses shall triage and initiate accurate and ongoing assessments of physical and psychosocial problems of patients of all ages from 0 through the lifespan, as evidenced in documentation and adherence to department standards.
    • Demonstrates organization and efficiency in relationship to time management and patient load (4-6 patients).
    • Identifies environmental and psychosocial factors affecting discharge needs and refers appropriately.
    • Knowledgeable of EMTALA issues that impact ED care and management.
    • Recognitive of communicable disease and potential for bioterrorism threats.
  • Planning and Implementation. Based on assessment, sound knowledge and critical thinking, ED nurses shall initiate nursing interventions and diagnostic tests according to standard, and function independently to assure high quality, timely and comprehensive care is offered.
    • Demonstrates an awareness of community resources for referral and integration of care.
    • Accountable for daily assignments to ensure that adequate supplies and equipment are available for patient care.
    • Demonstrates the ability to assume leadership role in emergency or crisis situations.
    • Able to identify replacement and alternative options, resources and communicating repair needs in the event of equipment malfunctions.
    • Maintains a working knowledge of department policy, procedure and standards and practices accordingly. (Uses Staff Resource RN)
    • Identifies opportunities to improve care, supports changes in delivery methods and participates in development of service improvements.
    • May be required to perform point of care testing. May be a point of care trainer.
  • Evaluation. ED nurses will evaluate patient response to treatment plans, collaborate with physicians, and modify care according to patient responses. Documentation will reflect this.
  • Communication. Nurses will assure open and timely communication with patients, family, and team members to assure understanding of care, delivery delays, and comprehensive care. This also includes peer review and team problem solving techniques.
    • Honest and constructive feedback will be given co-workers when requested, or when problem areas are identified.
    • Resolve conflicts
    • Documents all aspects of care legibly, concisely and accurately.
    • Maintains a current knowledge of reportable occurrences (child abuse, communicable diseases, domestic violence, etc.)
    • Maintains a minimum of three staff meetings a year and be responsible for minutes if not in attendance.
    • Communicates patients’ needs to appropriate members of health care team.
    • Asks for help when needed.
  • Teaching. The nurse shall assist the patient and significant other to have the information they need on discharge to care for themselves or their loved one.
  • Education. Nurses shall recognize their own learning needs and those of peers and assist in meeting those needs to maximize professional development and optimal emergency nursing practice.
    • 10 hours continuing education annually. Four hours of trauma specific required for Trauma designation.
    • Attends skill labs.
    • Meets annual competency requirements.
    • Participates in the orientation of new staff.
  • Professionalism. ED nurses shall be competent and current, adhering to established standards of practice. Their practice, activities and behaviors will characterize professionals.
    • Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as reflected in care and practice.
    • Serves on unit and hospital committees as requested, participates in unit decision making, problem solving, and problem resolution.
    • Delegates according to nurse practice act.
    • Demonstrates dependability and adherence to other personnel standards such as dress code, attendance, tardiness, and reporting for duty expectations.
    • Provides cost effective care and identifies opportunities to reduce cost. Containment of waste in practice is necessary.
  • Understands and runs Laboratory instrumentation.
  • Performs Laboratory tests and Procedures as directed.
  • It is the expectation that all care providers document accurately and in real time, utilizing the electronic medical record within their department.
  • Employees are expected to comply with all regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission Standards.
  • Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Utilities Management, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure.
  • Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include:
    • the use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses);
    • handling and disposing of infectious waste appropriately; and
    • hand washing as appropriate.
