HSE Training and Competency Specialist

SAIT’s Safety and Community Services department is responsible for the development, support and improvement of safety and security programs at SAIT. Comprised of Health, Safety and Environment and Campus Security and Emergency Services, SCS team members are focused on supporting the goal of a safe and secure campus environment for everyone in the SAIT community.


The Opportunity


As the HSE Training and Competency Specialist, you will drive the creation and delivery of impactful training programs that foster a strong culture of safety and well-being at SAIT. Working closely with teams like Safety and Community Services, Employee Services, and other key partners, you’ll ensure our health and safety learning strategies align with both organizational goals and compliance standards. In this dynamic role, you'll design, develop, and lead engaging training sessions, manage key communication networks, and support coordinated planning efforts to elevate HSE practices across the organization. Reporting to the Manager of Health, Safety, and Environment, you'll be instrumental in shaping a robust Health, Safety, and Environment Management System. 


The Role
  • Identifies and prioritizes SAIT’s short- and long-term health, safety, and environment (HSE) training and competency needs for employees and students. 
  • Develops, implements, and enhances SAIT’s HSE learning initiatives, collaborating with campus partners to establish effective training delivery and competency assessment strategies. 
  • Oversees the design and development of HSE training courses, materials, and resources. 
  • Supports the creation and evaluation of new and existing programs to ensure their relevance, quality, and cost-effectiveness. 
  • Assesses and reports on the effectiveness of training and competency programs to key stakeholders. 
  • Assists in identifying employees and students involved in high-risk tasks and provides guidance on developing and implementing competency profiles for these roles. Advises schools and departments on creating targeted training plans and recommends relevant external HSE training opportunities. 
  • Works with Employee Services (ES) to align HSE training with institutional training philosophies and systems. 
  • Contributes to managing SAIT’s institutional risk by identifying training needs for employees and students to ensure safe and effective work and learning activities. Collaborates with the Safety and Community Services team to identify risks and recommend training strategies to mitigate them. 
  • Proactively and actively contributes to the productive functioning and betterment of the S&CS and Corporate Services team 


Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree or diploma in adult education, human resources, health and safety, or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent. 
  • Recognized certification (e.g. CTDP, CPHR, CRSP, CRST) is an asset 
 
Experience and Skills: 
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of progressive experience in managing the development and delivery of training courses/programs, instructional design, learning plans, learning management systems, competency assessments etc. 
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles and experience using eLearning application/development tools and software. 
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully prioritize and implement multiple and complex training initiatives simultaneously. 
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety and/or environmental legislation, standards and best practices with demonstrated ability to interpret and apply same towards the identification and implementation of practical solutions is required. 
  • Sound judgment, interpersonal and facilitation skills. 
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills. 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. 
  • Excellent computer skills essential. 
  • Must be able to work independently and as well as within collaborative groups. 
  • Project management and/or change management training and experience is an asset. 
  • Experience in a post-secondary education an asset. 


Job classification: Safety and Environment Specialist

Salary range: $90,000 - $100,000

Hours Per Week: 37.5

A flexible Hybrid work model can be offered for this role in accordance with SAIT guidelines. However, the hybrid work schedule will vary and may require the incumbent to be on campus up to five days per week depending on operational requirements.
