Science Education Intern - Gene Editing Institute

ChristianaCare's Gene Editing Institute is searching for a Science Education Intern to support Gene Editing 360™, the institutes STEM-focused education program. Gene Editing 360™ is a suite of highly flexible educational tools designed to launch high school and college students on a journey of learning and discovery about the fundamentals of CRISPR gene editing technology. At the heart of the program is CRISPR in a Box™, an educational kit that provides students the opportunity to understand and utilize revolutionizing CRISPR/Cas technology and gene editing by completing a hands-on experiment.

Reporting to the Gene Editing Institute's education program manager, the interns' primary responsibility is to help facilitate CRISPR in a Box™ workshops.

The successful candidate will be a rising senior or recent graduate of a 4-year institute with a keen interest in education and a background in science. This paid internship requires a minimum of 20 hour/week from September 2023 to June 2024.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support the education program manager to deliver STEM workshops through Gene Editing 360™ three program models, Train the Trainer, Learning Lab, and GEI Comes to You.

  • Train the Trainer: A free monthly workshop at the Gene Editing Institute, that engages educators and provides them the tools, training, and resources to successfully implement CRISPR in a Box™ at their respective schools/organizations.

  • Learning Lab: A field-trip style immersive experience for students and their teachers to come on-site to the Gene Editing Institute and perform CRISPR In a Box™

  • GEI Comes to You: Allows members from the Gene Editing Institute to deliver CRISPR in a Box™ onsite at a partner location in this turnkey, fee-for-service program model.

  • Support with workshop set-up and coordination including but not limited to prepping laboratory materials, day of logistics, student/school correspondence, and paperwork.

  • Assist with the maintenance of databases housing program information.

  • Assist with development of hands-on activities for students to enhance STEM education.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
A rising college senior or a graduate student working toward a degree in a research science-medical field or alternatively in Biology, Chemistry, or other closely related field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences; including but not limited to teachers, students, and community leaders.

  • Ability to establish priorities and respect project deadlines.

  • Enthusiastic and enjoy working with groups of children and adults.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft office suite (word, excel, and power point) to create digital content as it relates to programmatic activities.

  • Ability to collect, input, analyze, and present survey data in a professional manner.
