Security Systems Technician

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Security & Emergency Services Division has an opening for a Security Systems Technician to join the team.


The Security Systems Technician position requires experience as a low voltage technician who will work under the day-to-day supervision of the Lead technician reporting to the Manager of Physical Security. As a member of the Physical Protection Systems team, the Security Systems Technician will be responsible for performing the maintenance, testing, quality control activities, and administration of a range of physical protection systems employed for Access Control, Video Surveillance, Alarm Monitoring, Intrusion Detection, and other electronic security systems.


This position will be required to read and interpret as-built construction drawings, schematics, sketches, topology diagrams, data flow diagrams, estimates, and component layout diagrams in addition to installation, maintenance, calibration, and operating manuals that support physical protection systems as well as business operations (e.g., data entry, reporting, and administrative support tasks).


What You Will Do:

  • Inspect, test, troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and upgrade access control, video surveillance, intercom, and alarm system hardware based on LBNL standards and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Maintain and track documentation on operational performance and service requests of the LBNL access control, video surveillance, security devices, and related systems.
  • System Administration of the Physical Access Control System (PACS) and Video Assessment Surveillance System (VASS).
  • Assist the team in performing regularly scheduled preventive and corrective maintenance on physical protection systems.
  • Support the Physical Protection Systems group with planning, scheduling, documentation, and organizing support efforts and materials needs.
  • Interpret blueprints, schematics, manuals, and other specifications to determine installation, maintenance, and testing procedures.
  • Provide pre-installation support with site surveys, wire identification, and wire route tracing.
  • Mounting enclosures and terminating endpoint devices (e.g., card readers, door contacts, cameras, transfer hinges, electric locks, request-to-exit devices, and cameras).
  • Assemble, program, and install new controllers, interfaces, cameras, and equipment to ensure proper functionality and operation.
  • Attend and perform training functions.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Provide technical support on access control and video surveillance systems to the LBNL community, Security Access Managers and Badge station operations.
  • May provide technical instructions and /or training to other Lab personnel.
  • Ability to respond to occasional emergency after-hours calls.

What is Required:

  • Minimum of 2-4 years related technical and/or mechanical experience in the areas of physical access control, video surveillance, and physical security.
  • Valid Driver's license with required knowledge, skills, and abilities for operating a motor vehicle.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use electronic test equipment, and appropriate hand and power tools of the trade.
  • Ability to interpret complex tests, assembly, calibration, maintenance, or operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic electricity such as AC/DC theory, Ohm's law.
  • General knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Color vision sufficient to discern wiring and component color codes, and safety-related colored signs, lamps, and warning devices.
  • LAN and WAN system knowledge.
  • Knowledge of IP-based and electronic security systems.
  • Knowledge of IP-based and electronic communication systems.
  • A working knowledge of Google Applications (e.g., Docs, Sheets, and Slides) and Microsoft Office are essential.
  • Ability to travel as needed (less than 5%).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Lenel OnGuard access control and Avigilon Control Center video surveillance systems and configuration.
  • Must be able to obtain core Lenel OnGuard and Avigilon foundation certifications.
  • Must be able to obtain an LBNL Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) certification for low voltage power supply work within 1 year of hire.
  • Experience working with Lenel Mercury access control hardware.
  • Experience with Avigilon, Panasonic, and Bosch camera and mounting hardware.
  • Computer-Aided electronics drafting and design-documentation skills.
  • Planning, teaching, organizing, and writing skills.
  • Experience working in a scientific research and development environment.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) eligible for overtime
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • The full hourly range for this position is $32.51 - $47.15 per hour for the job classification of 702.2.
  • It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.
  • Salary for this position will commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
