Job Description
SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Head for Cataloging, Metadata and Archive Services, the Senior Library Assistant follows set departmental procedures and performs nonprofessional library duties involving the preparation of materials for inclusion in the library’s collection, including physically processing library materials, mending books, and maintaining information in the library’s online catalog and institutional repository.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains holdings information on the Library’s integrated system, OCLC WMS, by updating locations, call numbers, etc.
Withdraws Library material, retrieves books from shelves, updates OCLC WMS following established departmental procedures.
Identifies and adds new titles to the online New Arrivals List using Springshare LibGuide software.
Physically processes Library books and media by printing out call number labels using the OCLC Connexion software, stamping, affixing labels to books; cover spines with tape; cover dust jackets with protective plastic jackets.
Mends library books following established best practices.
Responsible for the Bindery operation: maintaining communication with the binder, typing binding forms into the bindery vendor’s software and checking for accuracy of the work done by the binding company when the books are returned. Tracks upcoming changes to the vendor software. Trains others in its use. Reports problems and suggests solutions to the department head.
Assists patrons' inquiries pertaining to library hours, physical location of library material, offices or personnel ; refers complex questions to supervisor.
Assists in the maintenance of the Montclair State University Digital Commons institutional repository by uploading files and creating metadata.
Keeps up-to-date on all software/computer systems in use in the department.
Participates in collections projects as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
One (1) year of experience in library work.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
Some computer skills and clerical experience; detail and accuracy on information input.
Ability to use tools and equipment related to the mending and repair of books.
Knowledge of software applications and tools commonly used in library work, including Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe Acrobat DC, and Google Docs (including Forms and Sheets).
Ability to work in a team environment with a strong emphasis on quality control and customer service.
Ability to comprehend, interpret and implement Library and departmental policies and procedures.
Cultural competency with the ability to work and communicate well with library users, faculty, staff and students from varied backgrounds and talents.
Must be able to lift and/or move multiple books and book trucks that weigh at least 30lbs.
PREFERRED:
Familiarity with Library of Congress call number classification system.
Experience performing detail-oriented work, preferably with metadata or data entry.
Spanish Language fluency.

SALARY RANGE: A10: $35,790.32 - $49,873.61 *NOTE: Salaries for internal candidates are determined by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission's formula. Salaries for external candidates are determined up to step four- $40,484.75.
