About us

Our mission is to become the de facto way people learn foreign languages. We begin by teaching the next billion people English and Spanish.

English is the global language of business, culture, and communication, and over 1.5 billion people around the world are actively trying to learn right now. Others dream of communicating with the half-billion native Spanish speakers across the globe. The problem is that it's nearly impossible to learn to speak a language without constant access to a speaking partner. Grammar and vocab apps don't really help – you need to actually converse with someone.

Speak is on a journey to fix this. We're creating an AI-powered experience that replicates the flow of a conversation, without needing a human on the other end. The goal is to make it radically more accessible to be able to have conversations in a foreign language and eventually help hundreds of millions of people gain fluency who otherwise wouldn't be able to.

We started on this journey over five years ago and we've still got a long ways to go. We're thoughtfully adding new team members only when we think they can truly play a big role in our mission.

Speak launched first in South Korea where we have quickly grown to become the top grossing education app in the country. We have now delivered this winning product to more than 30 countries globally and are continuing to expand to more markets in the coming months. The company is well funded, raising a recent Series B backed by investors like OpenAI, Founders Fund, Y Combinator, Khosla Ventures, Lachy Groom, Josh Buckley, and others. We’re a team of 60 based primarily in SF, Seoul, Tokyo, and Ljubljana.

About this role

We're looking for someone to come on and lead the growth pod at Speak. The ideal candidate will be someone who lives and breathes metrics, has a strong product intuition, and is excited to build a growth engine at a rapidly scaling company. Speak is a next generation AI powered language learning tutor that is the most popular education app in our primary market, South Korea. And we’re scaling rapidly across the globe. A key part of this role is developing a growth model and unlocking top of funnel growth through rapid experimentation and optimization. You will work with other high performing team members in a super cross functional manner.

What you’ll be doing

  • Developing a growth model to help guide our strategy for growth and investment areas

  • Increase our active subscriber base by experimentally optimizing the entire onboarding funnel to increase ARPU and conversion rate

  • Driving top of funnel growth by partnering closely with the marketing team as well as building new growth loops

  • Establish and maintain platforms for in-app price testing, onboarding, and web testing to enable quick, hypothesis-driven experimentation

  • Define KPIs, set up and analyze experiments, and have a strong intuition for metric improvement

  • Conducting user research and analysis to generate insightful user-focused hypotheses for testing, aimed at improving funnel conversion, engagement, and retention

  • Work closely with the growth marketing team on projects like CRM infrastructure, new marketing data flows, SEO, and web projects

What we're looking for

  • Strong track recording shipping products users love

  • Strong ability to build robust growth models and deeply understand how to move metrics through structured optimization of key metrics

  • Experience building for consumers, particularly on mobile

  • A strong foundation in data and hypothesis-driven methodologies for funnel improvement and user engagement

  • Ability to conduct effective user interviews and user surveys to find the most important truths

  • Thinks about the world in terms of hypotheses

  • Can design A/B tests that drive impact over time

  • Strong technical understanding to work efficiently with engineers and advance technical data projects

  • Clear and impactful communication skills, particularly in collaborating with cross-functional teams and aligning on strategies

  • Ability to ruthlessly deprioritize everything but the most important and has deep experience reasoning through what to prioritize when bandwidth is at a premium

  • Understands that sometimes quality and speed are not mutually exclusive with effective scoping

  • Someone who is passionate about the problem and mission we're trying to solve
