The general salary range for this position is $104,000-$125,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Special Counsel, Farm Animals for the Animal Protection Law (APL) department. In this position you will develop innovative new legal interventions to achieve organizational strategic plan goals above and beyond the known tactics and metrics for success outlined in strategic plan dashboards. This position augments the more traditional legal work of the other lawyers in the department by asking and answering the question of what more could be done to achieve high priority strategic plan goals.
You will be responsible for:
- Advanced, self-directed work to develop new legal tactics, litigation, and other legal interventions to advance strategic plan goals and metrics;
- Advanced, self-directed work to deploy and execute new legal tactics, litigation, and other legal interventions to advance strategic plan goals and metrics;
- Conducts legal and strategic analysis to help find the most effective tactics to achieve strategic plan metrics;
- Provides advice to staff including on legal and policy strategy and campaign tactics;
- Assists in departmental management;
- Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school required;
- A minimum of seven (7) years of legal experience required;
- Admission to the bar in at least one applicable jurisdiction, and to the federal bar (district and circuit courts), or the ability to obtain admission;
- Ability to develop and successfully lead high-profile and complex litigation and other legal intervention campaigns and ensure those campaigns are in furtherance of organizational Strategic Plan goals;
- Knowledge of the specialized area of the assigned practice group (Farm Animals, Companion Animals, or Wildlife as appropriate);
- Willing and able to travel and work a flexible schedule;
- Ability to lead and guide staff to meet department and organizational goals;
- Strong knowledge of staff management practices. Flexible, willing to learn, and anticipates the needs of self and staff;
- Ability to set a positive tone for employees during their day;
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
- Ability to manage issues requiring problem resolution and conflict management with excellent interpersonal and intervention skills;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Interpersonal and public speaking skills to build relationships, develop influence, and facilitate meetings; high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
- Attention to detail and commitment to excellence, demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
- Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
