Job Summary
The Sr. EEG (Electromyography EMG/ Neuro-Ophtho) Tech under the direction of Supervisor will participate as an integral member of the Neurology Department by performing mainly Electromyograms, evoked potentials (EPs) and other specialized procedures in both adult and pediatric inpatient and outpatient settings, including nursing floors, intensive care units and other specialized locations. The position will ensure electrode and equipment integrity. The position actively participates in departmental and organizational programs, including performance improvement activities, in-services and staff development activities.
  • Adheres to training regarding ethical responsibilities, confidentiality, and HIPAA compliance.
  • Conforms to all OSHA and JCAHO laboratory policies and procedures (including guidelines for universal precautions) as well as hospital regulations.
  • Maintains appropriate interpersonal skills with patients, medical assistants, nurses, physician staff, and other hospital/clinic staff.
  • Explains the NCS test procedure to the patient to obtain the patient’s cooperation necessary for a complete examination. Checks the patient’s electronic medical record for orders and special needs, with particular attention to patients with pacemakers, defibrillators, and neurotransmitters.
  • Builds on basic knowledge of the peripheral nervous system, diseases related to electrophysiological medicine, instrumentation, basic electronics, and electrical safety.
  • Prepares the patient, applying a variety of surface electrodes as required; accurately obtains common NCSs; distinguishes between normal and abnormal results; describes all abnormal clinical manifestations observed during the test; and recognizes physiological and nonphysiological artifacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them.
  • Assists the EDX physician with the EDX studies as needed by preparing or manipulating the instrument and applying surface recording electrodes. 5
  • Keeps equipment clean and in operating condition, detects instrument malfunctions, and makes minor maintenance adjustments or reports the need for major repairs. Cleans and maintains electrodes.
  • Files print or electronic medical records according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications
  • Registered EEG Technologist (R. EEG T.)
  • At least two years of experience as an EEG Technologist.
  • At least two years’ experience in an acute care hospital setting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic medical terminology.
  • Experience with computerized medical equipment.
  • Possession of a high school diploma.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficient in computer skills including Word, Excel, and on line communication.
  • Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.
  • Graduate from an accredited training program in Electroneurodiagnostics or a combination of training and experience.
  • Ability to work variable shifts and days.
  • Demonstrates ability to be an independent, motivated self-starter
Preferred Qualifications
  • Successful completion of accredited neurodiagnostic program.
  • Completion of at least 12 months of fulltime (or equivalent) practical training performing Nerve Conduction Studies under the direct supervision of an ElectroDiagnostic xray physician.
  • Prior experience working in an academic medical center environment.
  • Possession of current CPR certification.
License/Certification
  • Registered EEG Technologist (R. EEG T.)
