Engineering Manager

Every developer has a tab open on Stack Overflow.

We are one of the most popular websites in the world - a community-based space focused on increasing productivity, decreasing cycle times, accelerating time to market, and protecting institutional knowledge.

Innovation is at the heart of everything we do. We embrace collaboration, transparency, and believe in leading with empathy; creating an environment where every Stacker knows they belong. We embrace that the unique contributions and points of view of all Stackers contribute to our success.

We are a Best Company to Work For, in addition to being recognized for Best Company Leadership, Best Company Happiness, Best Company Perks and Benefits, Best Company Work-Life Balance, Best Company Compensation, and Best Company Outlook.

We are a remote-first company with Hiring HUBs based in the US, Canada, UK, and Germany.

Stack Overflow is growing and we are looking for engineering managers to join the Platform Services group and help us build out services and tooling that are part of our Product Engineering organization focused on our Teams Product.

We’re looking for a capable, people-focused manager who will support the team by:

  • Ensuring they have the skills, direction and context they need
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to ensure we’re focused on the right priorities.
  • Guiding the team through building and iterating our features on our Teams product.
  • Creating processes and norms that will enable our teams to deliver with confidence and enthusiasm.

Eligible candidates must have demonstrated technical expertise in their careers, and have successfully worked with service oriented architectures in cloud environments. You do not need to know every part of our stack coming in; you will learn our system’s current state from your team and colleagues.

We’re a remote-first team. You’ll be part of a remote work culture that emphasizes online communication (JIRA, Slack, GitHub, Hangouts). While we’re generally very flexible on working hours, for this position you’ll need to live and work within the GMT+2:00 (Europe) or GMT -4:00 EDT time zones.

What You’ll Do:

  • Directly managing 2 engineering teams consisting of between 3 to 6 engineers on each team
  • Ensuring the operation of each team’s general team exercises, such as goal setting, check-ins, reports, trainings, etc. for all members of your teams
  • Have weekly 1:1’s with all direct reports
  • Work with other Agile team members such as Product Managers, Agile Leaders, Tech Leads, and others, to ensure that team level goals are being met.
  • Work with Directors to ensure that teams are executing products and functions necessary to meet organizational strategic needs
  • Organize and run any meetings necessary for their teams to accomplish their goals
  • Provide career guidance and help engineers manage their career progression at Stack Overflow
  • Mediate and resolve conflicts

What we expect to see:

  • 4+ years of experience directly managing engineers in a modern engineering environment
  • 2+ years of software engineering experience with knowledge of MVC architectures, modern web development practices and general common architecture practices.
  • Demonstrated practical experience with modern cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Continuously develop your team through coaching and feedback.
  • Collaborate with Technical Product Management, Product Engineering, and Platform Engineering  teams to produce solutions that support our future growth and direction
  • Proactively identify, communicate, and address risks and roadblocks
  • Create internal processes that improve collaboration and delivery
  • Be available as an escalation point of contact for outages and incidents, and direct the team to drive the issue to resolution
  • A strong desire to help their team members reach their full potential and progress in their careers
  • Experience managing remote-first or distributed teams of engineers
  • A track record of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion on their teams and product
  • Communicate, evolve, and revisit expectations that:
    • Create an environment that allows for safe and rewarding experimentation
    • Ensure our work product is well documented and designed
    • Result in predictable, resilient, and reliable tooling and services
    • Reward iterative and predictable deliverables that add value to our system

What you’ll get in return:

  • Competitive Base Salary
  • Generous paid vacation
  • Generous parental leave (16 weeks at 100% pay), family care leave, and unlimited sick days
  • Equity (RSUs) for all employees at all levels
  • Industry-leading health benefits that are applicable per country of residence for all our full-time employees
  • Company-paid Life Insurance
  • Home Internet stipend
  • Professional allocation for your growth and development
  • One-time allowance to assist with your home office setup
  • Company-paid access to Calm, Bravely, LinkedIn Learning, MyAcademy and Overdrive
