Job Summary

NIEHS is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated Title 42(g) Staff Scientist 1 in support of the Office of Program Operations (OPO) , within the Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) , formerly Division of National Toxicology Program (DNTP), at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). DTT is a team-based scientific organization, and its mission is to improve public health through development of data and knowledge that are translatable, predictive, and timely. Much of the work carried out by DTT is in support of the National Toxicology Program , an interagency partnership of the Food and Drug Administration, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and NIEHS.

Staff scientists in DTT work in multidisciplinary teams and collaboratively with scientists in other federal agencies, institutes, industry, and academia. In addition to scientific research, Staff Scientists occupy a critical place servicing varying levels of intramural science providing laboratory and facility management, technical support and innovation, and managerial, administrative, and other mission support activities.

Responsibilities: May include but are not limited to:
conceptualize, develop, implement, and coordinate scientific and operational activities related to chemistry and absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicokinetics (ADME/TK) in support of hazard characterization of xenobiotics (e.g., environmental chemicals and mixtures) of concern to adverse human health,
provide direction for scientific activities (e.g., chemistry, ADME/TK) performed by contract research organization(s) in support of DTT research, following receipt of appropriate training and certification in government contract management ,
collaborate with federal partners, other organizations, and stakeholders to develop coordinated research strategies,
represent DTT and NIEHS at national and international scientific workshops and meetings,
engage with senior management and in public forums, foster stakeholder engagement, delegate responsibilities to contractors, individuals, and teams and monitor progress to all facets of plan,
promote continuous skill and professional development of employees, identify knowledge and skill gaps, provide constructive feedback and facilitative mentorship, and
contribute to proactive technical and business operation practices, recommending cutting-edge and best practices for process improvement.

Required Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (e.g., ScD, PharmD) in chemistry or a related field and preferably an early-to-mid career candidate,
experience and training in management of multiple complex projects,
experience in use of state-of the-art analytical chemistry approaches to understand xenobiotic exposures (e.g., exposomics) and their potential to alter biological pathways (e.g., metabolomics) that can lead to adverse health outcomes,
experience in the conduct and evaluation of in silico, in vitro , and in vivo ADME/TK studies to enable translation of animal toxicology study data to determine the potential for adverse human health effects of xenobiotics,
recognition as a scientifically active and respected expert (e.g., as evidenced by publications and, presentations, honors, awards, elected positions in professional societies, invited reviewer for journals),
strong oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal, negotiation and facilitation skills,
ability to innovate and work in a team-based multi-disciplinary organization, and
ability to provide advice and consultation to both technical and non-technical personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

It is preferred that the candidate reside within the local commuting area of Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. This position is not eligible for remote work. At the supervisor’s discretion, this position may offer work schedule flexibilities , including telework.

As a NIH Title 42(g) Staff Scientist 1, the employee is generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources as a principal investigator, although they will often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the branch.
