Staff Engineer - Data Reliability (ElasticSearch)

We are looking for a Staff SRE with experience in deploying and maintaining Elasticsearch clusters. The Data Reliability team is responsible for supporting the infrastructure, orchestration, and reliability needs of some of Fastly's most data-intensive applications as well as the data storage solutions for the Fastly control plane such as MySQL, ClickHouse, and Redis. As a Staff SRE, you will be an integral member of the team and will lead the migration of the Elasticsearch tier. You will partner with and support other engineering teams at Fastly by providing them with a platform that enables effective and reliable delivery of high-quality, high-throughput, globally distributed data systems and products. As a distributed team, we employ a variety of styles to get our work done - though we put a high value on working collaboratively, we also rely on asynchronous communication.

What You'll Do:

• Assume responsibility for managing and supporting our Elasticsearch clusters, including planning and creating new clusters
• Design, develop & maintain automated tools to enhance the maintenance workflow of the clusters
• Provide mentorship and guidance to your teammates generally, and specifically in all aspects concerning Elasticsearch
• Collaborate with your team to offer support for various data storage services
• Work with cross functional product & engineering teams to deliver new products at scale
• Improve performance of data access through query optimization, etc
• Partner and support engineering teams with everything from reliability, observability, and setting SLOs, to solving complex code issues
• Monitor, operate, and provision infrastructure to enable rapid deployment and resilient operation in a large-scale Linux environment
• Anticipate the reliability, scalability, and performance needs of Data Engineering teams at Fastly
• Participate in on-call rotation

What We're Looking For:

• Experience maintaining and building large (100s of TB), highly available, and reliable Elasticsearch clusters on bare-metal servers
• Understanding of the challenges involved in managing, operating, and maintaining scalable and reliable streaming data storage systems
• Experience in Linux administration.
• Experience with metric collection and monitoring tools like Prometheus or services like DataDog
• Experience developing automation tools in Go or Python that are performant & easily maintainable
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• A great teammate: communicative, collaborative, empathetic with a thoughtful, customer-driven approach
• Strong documentation skills and a willingness to mentor others
• You have experience working with teams distributed across different time zones

We'll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:

• Experience with container technology, Kubernetes/Docker/Helm, or similar
• Knowledge of one or more configuration management tools (Chef, Ansible, Puppet)
• Knowledge of one or more storage systems (MySQL, ClickHouse, RDS, BigQuery, BigTable, etc.)

Work Hours:

• This position will require you to be available during core business hours as well as occasional nights and weekends as required for on-call support rotation.

Fastly currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles which allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home.

This position may require travel as required by your role or requested by your manager.

Salary

The estimated salary range for this position is $181,220 to $226,520.

Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly's equity and discretionary bonus programs.
