REDBAND TROUT STOCK ASSESSMENT TECHNICIAN SCIENTIFIC TECHNICIAN 2 Fish Program – Fish Management Division Spokane, Washington – Spokane County Anticipated Appointment Length:2.5 months September 3, 2024 – November 15, 2024 These Scientific Technicians play a key role in pursuit of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s mission to conserve, enhance, and restore native fish populations in Washington State. They provide technical assistance to project lead biologists on the Joint Stock Assessment Project (JSAP), Lake Roosevelt Evaluation Project (LREP) and the Northern Pike Monitoring and Suppression Project. The Projects are a cooperative effort by regional co-managers to conduct monitoring and evaluation activities on fish populations in the Spokane River, Lake Roosevelt, and the upper Columbia River and associated tributaries. The activities of these Scientific Technician positions are directly related to the conservation of native fish populations in eastern Washington. Lake Roosevelt Northern Pike Suppression Effort – Photo credit: WDFW Here is what you will be doing, • Conduct field surveys to collect baseline fisheries and habitat data. • Assist with fisheries surveys including but not limited to backpack electrofishing, boat electrofishing, gill netting and creel surveys. • Maintains equipment and tools to ensure proper function and safety, including maintenance of boats and vehicles. • Organizes biological samples and prepares them for laboratory analysis. • Compiles field data and enters data into computer using Microsoft Office programs (EXCEL, Word) and conducts quality assurance/quality control to ensure data is free of errors and ready for analysis. WORKING CONDITIONS: • Work Setting, including hazards: • Work is conducted in field, warehouse, and office/lab settings. Involves many hours of vehicle travel and may include driving long distances (200 miles per day). • Field work is conducted during inclement weather (including extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, snow, ice, and working in cold water for long periods of time). • Most field work is conducted in remote locations with dense vegetated cover and in and/or around swift flowing water and may include long hours on a boat on large bodies of water. Work is conducted in daylight and dark conditions. • May require repetitive lifting and carrying equipment weighing 75 pounds or more for short distances and lighter loads of up to 50 pounds for long distances. • Requires hiking over rough, slippery and steep terrain for long distances carrying equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. • Potential encounters with dangerous wildlife are possible. • Individual may be work with chemicals for biological sampling (MS-222, ethanol, Virkon), stream and lake rehabilitation (rotenone), equipment maintenance (solvents) and vehicle operation (gasoline, oil). • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. • Schedule: • Generally, 40 hours/ week, workdays may vary and may require working nights, weekends and holidays. Must be able to maintain a flexible schedule that meets the rigorous and variable workload. Will regularly require work in excess of 8 hours per day. • Travel Requirements: • Requires extensive travel times within the workday. May require driving or riding in a vehicle greater than 200 miles per day and may include travel on unimproved roads. • Tools and Equipment: • Power tools (drills, saws), manual hand tools, electronic balances, handheld GPS, fish tagging equipment, backpack electrofishing gear, RFID equipment, boats, gill nets. Staff will be required to wear waders and wading boots throughout most days and other PPE (gloves, PFDs, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators) at times to accomplish project objectives. • Customer Interactions: • May be required to interact with landowners and inquiring public regarding project. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1. Or Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist. Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes. Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: • Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability.
