Sustainability Consultant

The Sustainability Consultant will be responsible for owning and managing projects and programs to consult with our clients and develop programs that align with the RTS Sustainability mission, values, and stances. In this position, you may need to support other departments in providing holistic sustainability services to our clients. This role may require traveling to onsite client locations in the NYC metro area, and at times, outside across the US and Canada. In this role, the Consultant is expected to adhere to all safety, professional, and RTS DEI expectations and support other team members as needed, especially by assisting in conducting benchmarking services as required. The position reports to the SVP of Sustainability.

The successful candidate will serve as a subject matter expert to project teams and staff, providing information and expertise regarding sustainable materials management and sustainable waste management, programs, and products. In addition to client project responsibilities, the consultant will plan and assist with internal initiatives including, but not limited to: The integration of sustainability into RTS policy and procedure through internal education workshops and research; tracking and reporting key performance metrics internally and assisting with client data reporting; Staff training and resource development; and promoting corporate responsibility across the firm’s operations, developing educational seminars for training clients, creating literature and documents to assist with sustainability initiatives.

This position is located in the New York City metropolitan area and you will report into the RTS HQ offices Monday - Thursday

Other duties may be assigned on an as-needed basis.

Requirements

Essential Sustainability Responsibilities:

• Champion goals and performance targets and provide assistance to project teams for creating better waste solutions.

• Help with/review project specifications and procedures to meet certification and/or local law requirements.

• Develop and present topics for staff education and grow firm-wide resources aimed at promoting better integration of sustainable material management strategies

• Assist clients with developing sustainability programs and initiatives towards achieving stated waste and recycling goals.

• Create accurate and detailed reports for clients and management.

• Maintain knowledge of all state and federal regulations and relevant professional standards.

• Attend seminars and networking events to interact with Industry Leaders

• Provide expertise in sustainability issues and remain current to changes in legislation

• Develop (or assist in the development of) internal policy and procedures for RTS sustainability and corporate social responsibility guidelines

• Develop templates for signage and other training materials for client waste management programs

• Provide guidance and assistance for client waste management programs, including email correspondence, equipment procurement, onsite meetings, and training

• Monitor client programs and provide guidance and assistance for program improvements

• Coordinate with RTS data analytics to track and maintain data, then analyze data and create reports for clients

• Coordinate research on sector-specific best practices to share with clients

• Develop Internal and External Sustainability Training Programs

• Respond to technical documents.
• Assist in conducting waste audit in the NYC region

• Keep license and certifications up to date

Education and Experience

• Experience in a sustainability/ waste management preferred

• TRUE Zero Waste Advisor and LEED accreditation highly valued. Knowledge of multiple sustainability rating and certification systems preferred.

• Experience developing and implementing sustainability concepts and strategies as demonstrated through actual project or program work with demonstrable results. Proven effectiveness in coordinating with management teams, vendors, and consultants.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

• Knowledge of the waste industry and sustainable waste management concepts, and other waste-related issues is a plus.

• Comfortable with public speaking and networking.

• Excellent writing skills.

• Capable of working with minimal supervision.

• Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills.

• Detail-oriented and organized with proven experience in simultaneously managing multiple projects.
