Systems Engineer

The salary range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.
At WGU, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is:

Pay Range: $70,300.00 - $101,900.00

The primary focus of the Systems Engineer for Infrastructure Operations is to engineer and support platforms related to Microsoft collaboration technologies. You will be working closely with product, IT and business stakeholders. The Systems Engineer will be primarily responsible for maintaining and supporting components of WGU’s Office 365 systems and related infrastructure. Individuals in this position will need to maintain a high level of ownership and investment in tasks associated with both new and ongoing Office 365 based needs within the Ed Tech environment. The Systems Engineer must be able to lead efforts in troubleshooting, remediating, and optimizing Office 365-based issues, while also working with engineering requirements and providing strategic solutions.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Support and maintain the productivity experience (messaging & collaboration technologies) solution anchored on but not limited to the Microsoft Office 365 (O365) and Google G Suite platforms.
  • Contribute to O365 and Exchange Online enterprise migrations.
  • Support Active Directory.
  • Partner with Product teams to identify platform capability/functional business requirements.
  • Partner with Infrastructure and Operations peers to develop short and long-term roadmaps.
  • Contribute to technical discussions with stakeholders that drive decisions and implementation plans.
  • Contribute to the engineering area with effective agile delivery processes and service metrics.
  • Participate in vendor relationship management across collaboration products.
  • Provide mentoring to less experienced Associate Systems Engineers.
  • May be required to work occasional evenings and weekend hours to support production releases and resolve system issues.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Advanced scripting, development skills and PowerShell
  • Ability to develop solutions and processes for cost efficient service delivery

  • May provide guidance and assistance to more junior technical professionals.
Job Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a technical university degree or equivalent experience.
  • 2 years of prior relevant work experience or advanced degree.
  • Advanced degrees (Master’s or PhD) may be required for certain disciplines and reduce the experience requirement by 2-4 years.
Department Specific Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent work experience.
  • 2+ years of mid-level (tier 2 or 3) administration and engineering experience in an enterprise IT environment, having performed operational and break/fix activity.
  • Experience as an M/O365 Administrator is required.
  • Advanced scripting and development skills & PowerShell.
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and presentational skills.
  • Working knowledge of authentication mechanisms.
  • Some experience with the design and implementation of IT projects and major efforts, to include documentation, communication, and coordination of all components.
  • Expertise with coordinating customer support (Tier-1 or Tier-2) personnel with O365 related incidents and tasks.
  • Expertise in coordination and escalation to Microsoft support and ability to coordinate with first- and third-party software vendors as needed for resolution of business-impacting problems.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Microsoft Certified Professional
  • Broad knowledge of other Microsoft systems infrastructure products such as Azure and Windows Server
  • Microsoft Exchange, including 2016 and Online versions
  • Microsoft SharePoint Online with expertise implementing and supporting OneDrive for Business
  • Microsoft Teams for Business Online
  • Microsoft Power Platform: Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, Power Virtual Assistant
  • Web-based Office Online applications, including Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online and OneNote Online
  • Active Directory Federation Services
  • Azure AD Connect
  • Understanding of legacy authentication technologies
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
