About the Role


The Athletic seeks a junior editor for its football desk in the United Kingdom. The candidate will be involved in all the day-to-day coverage of professional football, including writer collaboration, the editing and publishing of content, and news gathering. The ideal candidate will be self-starting and energetic, a sports-loving newshound who can edit any kind of story and thrive in a real-time news environment. 


This role requires a combination of office-based and remote working, with a minimum 3 days per week in our London office.


Responsibilities
  • Be ready to jump on breaking news and participate in live coverage.
  • Generate thoughtful, smart and relevant story ideas.
  • Line and copy edit stories from start to finish for quality, context, style and grammar.
  • Work with writers and provide thoughtful guidance in covering news and events while also bolstering company initiatives.
  • Identify ideas for developing news stories.
  • Embrace innovative methods to cover news in a live environment.
  • Follow best practices and use data and feedback on headline writing for SEO purposes.


Requirements
  • Any experience in news and feature editing on digital platforms a plus.
  • Experience in content development, from idea generation to publishing.
  • Strong news judgment.
  • Flexibility: Adapt to fast-paced work environments where needs and priorities can change quickly.
  • Deep knowledge of and a passion for sports, primarily football.
  • Knowledge of WordPress and photo editing skills is a plus.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays, as needed.
  • This role requires a combination of office-based and remote working, with a minimum 3 days per week in our London office.
