Role: Manager, State Advocacy and Conversion Therapy Campaigns

Location: This role will be remote in the continental United States, Alaska, or Hawaii

Reports to: Sr. Manager, State Advocacy

Eligibility:  Authorization to work for any employer in the United States is required. The Trevor Project will not sponsor a work visa for this role.

Salary Range: $75,000 - $80,000


Summary

The Manager of State Advocacy and Conversion Therapy Campaigns will be responsible for designing, building, and leading proactive state-level legislative strategies and campaigns related to ending conversion therapy and other priorities. This includes expanding partnerships, working with key legislators and government stakeholders, building coalitions and relationships, managing data collection, distributing Trevor-branded materials/research/talking points, and grassroots and grasstops mobilization. This role will also support in state defensive priorities as needed. 



Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and report on relevant federal and state agency action and federal and state-level legislation related to conversion therapy and other priorities as needed
  • Collaborate with other members of the Advocacy team to further The Trevor Project’s mission through legislative advocacy and public education efforts
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively prioritize across multiple short- and long-term projects
  • Support the development and execution of strategy in partnership with the Advocacy team on issues like conversion therapy and other priorities 
  • Manage partnerships and alliances to advance and refine the advocacy strategy
  • Represent The Trevor Project at panels, conferences, and other meetings as necessary
  • Engage directly with key stakeholders, deploy strategic communications, and share and leverage evidence
  • Exhibit a meticulous level of follow-through and attention to detail in engaging and cultivating stakeholders
  • Produce and analyze data that is relevant to the field, including the creation of reports for public consumption
  • Draft and edit policy memos, comments, letters, talking points, and other advocacy resources
  • Coordinate  with the  communications, education, operations, research, and other departments to enable internal collaboration on advocacy related projects
  • Assist with public education efforts for LGBTQ-relevant policies and suicide prevention support efforts through outreach to policymakers, conference presentations 
  • Develop and forge relationships with key organizations, offices, and members of the non-profit sector to build a strong coalition for relevant advocacy needs 
  • Be an advocate for LGBTQ youth through public speaking and education
  • Manage volunteers and interns as needed
  • Demonstrate fair, ethical, and equitable business practices
  • Learn eagerly, share knowledge appropriately, and improve continuously
  • Demonstrate successful planning and problem-solving skills, including multitasking and working well within tight timelines
  • Work, communicate, and collaborate effectively with others

  • Other relevant duties and responsibilities as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Collaborative. You have a history of advocating with local,  state, and national partners and have experience working with marginalized communities (e.g. LGBTQ people, communities of color, and people with disabilities, among others) and can be a team player with colleagues throughout The Trevor Project. Experience in advocacy spaces is highly desirable. 
  • Dynamic advocate. You know how to navigate power in state capitals and city halls around the country while persuading lawmakers and their staff to do the right thing. You are an excellent speaker and can convince people to take action to protect LGBTQ youth.
  • Detail-oriented. You pay attention to small details that can have a huge impact on the organization and you work  to make sure your work is thorough and complete.
  • Clear communicator. You communicate clearly and concisely up, down, and across the organization. You are great at getting and giving constructive feedback. 
  • Relationship builder. You have the ability to cultivate relationships. You understand that people are the core of who we are and place a premium on building coalitions and external relationships to achieve tangible policy results. 
  • Culturally competent. You have a nuanced understanding of the experiences of LGBTQ folks. You are passionate and willing to learn more about the marginalized identities, and bring your awareness to all the work you do.
  • Visionary builder. You are someone who thinks strategically. You are excited about the opportunity to take the status quo as just a starting point, then implement best practices and continually innovate. 
  • Goal-oriented. You set measurable and achievable goals, then focus on exceeding them.

  • People Manager.  Experience training, managing, and mentoring volunteers and interns. 
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English


$75,000 - $80,000 a year
