Construction Accountant

Thompson Thrift is seeking to hire a full-time Construction Accountant for our office in Terre Haute, IN. Construction Accountant collaborates with project management in preparing daily and monthly progress invoices for work performed during the process. They research and interpret expenses for their projects to seek better knowledge of their job costs. They will integrate finalized budgets into the ERP software and compile owner billings. They process and audit subcontractor and vendor invoices. Construction Accountant is referred to as an internal auditor of the company and will analyze a projects finances to help the executive staff in strategic decision making. They maintain accurate and timely cash expenditure data, prepare payment requests for all contractors and suppliers, and make sure all paperwork is submitted in a timely, accurate manner. Construction Accountant compare budgets to track monthly costs and activity to provide insight into areas that might need cost reduction or process improvement. They possess strong analytical skills and provide suggestions to improve processes. They communicate directly with owners, third parties, contractors, subcontractors, financial departments and project teams. They perform under minimal supervision and will handle complex issues and problems, with only referring to higher-level staff of the more complex issues.  

Responsibilities 

  • Prepares daily and monthly progress invoices for work performed each month.
  • Researches and interprets expenses for their projects to seek better understanding of their job costs.
  • Integrates finalized budgets into the ERP software and compiles Owner Billings.
  • Process and audit subcontractor and vendor invoices.
  • Analyzes a projects finances to help in strategic decision making.
  • Maintain accurate and timely cash expenditure date, prepare payment requests for subcontractors and vendors, and make sure all paperwork is submitted in a timely, accurate manner.
  • Compares budgets to track monthly costs and activities to provide insight into areas that might need cost reduction or process improvement.
  • Compiles and sorts invoices and checks.
  • Facilitates accounts payable duties.
  • Records business transactions.
  • Updates key performance dashboard with manpower data, change order logs, and aged back charges.
  • Assists Construction Accountants and project teams in various tasks throughout the project life cycle.
  • Utilizes computer systems to update databases, pay bills and track down lien waivers.
  • Ensures accurate cost records and keeps the records up to date.
  • Tests and identifies opportunities for process improvements and assists Construction Accountant team in implementation of various improvements.
  • Understands how activities and their costs are linked to products, processes, and customers.
  • Tracks monthly costs and production activity to provide insight into areas needing cost reduction and process or profit improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)
  • Handles moderately complex issues and problems, and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff. Performs work under direct supervision. Handles basic issues and problems, and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff. Possesses beginning to working knowledge of subject matter.
  • Requires an Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field of study.
  • 1 year of experience preferred, internships or voluntary positions considered as work experience
  • Organizational skills.

  • Problem-solving skills. Mathematical skills. Oral and written communication skills.

The employee is regularly required to be mobile and the employee occasionally travels both short and long distances via a variety of conveyances. The employee occasionally performs work on-site at construction work sites, office locations, and/or off-site venues. Performing this job will sometimes require the employee to walk work sites that do not have infrastructure, this includes walking on uneven surfaces, through mud, through ruts, etc. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office or remote setting. The noise in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate in an office setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work at construction work sites where the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and the risk of electrical shock. The noise in the construction work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is required to work in compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
