The Toast POS app is the central pillar of Toast’s restaurant products. Every day, many thousands of servers, hosts, bartenders, and chefs use Toast’s POS to serve millions of guests! 

At Toast, Android isn’t just one of multiple mobile platforms -- Android is the foundational technology stack for our POS products. In fact, Toast designs and sells our own specialized Android tablets so we can provide the best integrated hardware/software products.  

Our POS Tables and Orders Workflow team is responsible for managing some of the restaurant's most essential workflows, including processing on-premise and off-premise orders, seating guests in service areas, and assigning servers to tables. These functions are supported by a coordinated network of tablets and peripherals that operate typically for 10 to 12 hours a day. It is crucial for the POS system to perform at peak speed, and in the event of network issues, it must remain operational. Meeting these rigorous demands requires us to push our technology stack to its limits.

While the technical challenges are significant, the impact of our work on customers is both immediate and substantial. Our customers rely on the POS throughout the day. By designing new features with exceptional user experience, we enhance staff satisfaction, improve the guest experience, and positively affect the restaurant's profitability. We are looking for an experienced technologist with a proven track record of driving cross-team impact to join our POS Tables and Orders Workflow team. This hands-on technical role involves significant technical design, collaboration across POS and Fintech teams, and large-scale problem-solving.

About this roll* (Responsibilities) 

• Define the technical direction for the Toast POS Tables and Orders workflows in partnership with architectural leaders and senior engineers.
• Ensure the technical quality of the Toast POS Tables and Orders workflows.
• Promote continuous improvement in architecture, codebase, and technical practices.
• Collaborate with both technical and non-technical leaders to translate business challenges into actionable projects across the organization.
• Lead the software design for key features and components of the Tables and Orders workflows, while also supporting junior engineers in their design efforts.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to their professional development.
• Oversee effort estimation and apply sound judgment to facilitate effective project planning.
• Act as a catalyst for the overall success of the Restaurant engineering organization.

Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

• 6+ years experience delivering mobile products to a large customer base 
• Experience in mobile codebases with dozens of developers  
• Deep experience with Java, Kotlin, and Android
• Experienced at communicating technical designs and contributing to the design process
• History of technical and business impact across multiple teams 
• Collaborative and solution-oriented partner to business and product leaders
