TRENDING SPORTS REPORTER

Chron is looking for a Trending Sports Reporter who's focused on what fans care about—both on the field and off. The ideal candidate can quickly write up breaking news, drive cultural conversations surrounding Houston's teams, athletes, and events, and speak with an authoritative Texas perspective about American sports. We count on our Trending Sports Reporter for everything from quick coverage of surprising in-game moments to news about athletes' personal lives, disputes taking place on social media, longer form profiles, thoughtfully reported features, and evergreen stories about Houston sports history. We’re looking for someone who can feed Houston’s hungry sports audience and be Chron’s voice in on-going conversations with fans. Chron's Trending Sports Reporter should be engrossed in the Houston sports scene, have a strong background writing and reporting, be able to type and publish stories quickly when the news calls for it, and be eager to craft new angles on the daily news and find stories no one else is covering.

Your duties on the team:

• Pitch, report and write high-quality quick hits, news and feature stories that take an innovative approach to covering the Houston's crowded sports landscape
• Idea generation: keep fresh ideas flowing to assure the site is fed with compelling content
• Local/regional perspective: you know Houston and Texas sports well, understand what residents care about and what readers will be excited to read and share
• Excellent reporting, writing and communication chops, particularly within news journalism
• Facility with analytics tools and ability to unpack those metrics to spot areas of opportunity and audience growth
• High metabolism for turning out must-read stories every day

Requirements

• 2+ years of relevant experience in writing and publishing or digital media
• Experience writing and reporting local sports coverage (beyond gamers)
• Confidence in your unique voice as both sports expert and fan
• Top-notch writing skills and ability to meet deadlines
• Excellent news judgment and understanding of both media ethics and AP Style
• Facility with content management systems, analytics tools like Google Trends, social media platforms, and other publishing tools
