We are looking for a Product Development Designer who will be responsible for developing innovative concepts and optimizing product designs. We are looking to add someone to our team who is a lateral thinker, able to navigate complexity, inspire, reframe, embrace ambiguity, and prototype solutions. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Product Design
- Meet with sales & marketing, engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure designs are feasible, cost-effective, and aligned with the company's strategic goals.
- Create 2D & 3D conceptual and detailed layouts, parts and assemblies in Solidworks.
- Create detailed 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings for parts and assemblies in Solidworks.
- Assist in performing calculations to ensure safe, efficient, and adequate performance for structural, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic mechanisms.
- Source and adequately select components such as conveyor belting, motors, gearboxes, valves, actuators, hydraulic units, sensors, chains, timing belts and various other components to optimize performance, durability, and cost-efficiency.
- Develop automation & controls logic for standard products with our controls division.
Prototyping
- Hands-on assembly or modification of protypes using hand tools and larger equipment such as overhead cranes and forklifts as required
- Conduct prototype testing at Tri-Mach facilities or occasionally at customer sites to validate design concepts and functionality
- Monitor and report on project progress, and resourcing needs on a regular basis, communicating delays or issues in a proactive manner
Product Documentation
- Create project scope documents and timelines by collaborating with stakeholders from sales & marketing, engineering, procurement, manufacturing, and quality departments.
- Record engineering decisions, computations, and FEA outcomes for standard products.
- Develop test plans and schedules for evaluating prototypes.
- Maintain detailed documentation during every stage of the prototype testing process.
- Assist in the scientific research and experimental development (SR&ED) project documentation process.
- Develop detailed equipment operating & maintenance manuals for standard products.
- Assist in products launches and creating promotional materials.
Industry Research
- Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive products to inform and enhance design strategies.
- Participate in industry trade shows, attend seminars, and visit customer facilities to stay informed about the latest trends and challenges in the field.
General
- Balance a workload of multiple projects while maintaining deadline, quality, and budget commitments.
- Consistently demonstrate professional behavior that aligns with the company's values, including your choice of language, dress code, and quality of work.
- Travel to customer locations as required
- Always conduct oneself in a professional manner in alignment with Company values, including but not limited to language use, attire, and workmanship
- In accordance with company policy and relevant employment legislation, overtime and work outside of regular hours, and being on call may be required at the discretion of the company

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- You have a Post-Secondary Degree/Diploma in mechanical engineering, industrial design, or a related field
- You have a minimum of 3-6 years industrial equipment design experience
- Experience in 3D CAD software (preferably SolidWorks) creating parts, multi-level assemblies and 2D manufacturing drawings. Familiarity with simulation tools for stress analysis (FEA).
- Are able to size motors, gearboxes, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, selecting electrical sensors, and working with industrial control systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot design issues and implement effective solutions.
- Willingness and ability to travel throughout Canada and the United States as required.
- You are able to adjust quickly to changing priorities and conditions, cope effectively with complexity and change, quickly understand and absorb new information and respond appropriately
- You are able to problem solve and use critical thinking in a fast-paced, agile environment
ASSETS
- Understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes, material properties, and industry standards is an asset
- Hands-on experience in assembly, testing and troubleshooting of mechanical systems is an asset
- Previous experience designing food-grade equipment is an asset
- Solidworks CAD Design Expert (CSWE) certification is an asset
- Note: All members of the product development team must obtain the CSWE certification within the first three months of employment.
