Our family of services includes the area's only inpatient oncology unit the Orthopedic Spine and Hand Center Family Birth Center the Lactation Support Center and retail store and many others. Mercy Hospital Downtown is a 194-bed facility located in downtown Bakersfield. Mercy Hospital Southwest is a 78-bed facility and the only hospital located in the rapidly growing area west of Highway 99. Responsibilities

Position Summary:

 

Under the direction of the Supervisor the Laboratory Assistant is responsible for collecting receiving and processing blood specimens; receiving and processing specimens for bacterial culture. Duties include: receiving and processing blood samples; centrifugation and loading barcoded specimens onto automated analyzers that are interfaced to the LIS; preparing aliquots and handling of reference lab specimens; performing waived and moderate complexity testing under direct supervision. Additional duties include clerical and telephone communication in support of the Laboratories functions.

 

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • CA CPT-2 LICENSE and Heartsaver required
  • Education level necessary to obtain required licensure and certifications.
  • CPI class will be completed within 90 days of hire and every other year thereafter.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience in an acute hospital preferred.
  • Basic laboratory bench practice skills.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology
  • General typing/computer skills.
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Must have the ability to read write and speak English.
  • Ability to perform all phlebotomy functions including venous capillary and arterial punctures on adult pediatric and neonates populations.
  • Ability to adapt to work load demands and remain calm and function efficiently during difficult or emergency situations.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
