Principal Engineer

As a Principal Engineer, you will provide technical engineering oversight for the Geotechnical and Construction Materials Testing service lines within the Mid-Atlantic region.  The position will complete projects for existing clients as well as contribute, lead, design, and streamline the daily engineering operations to ensure they align with the business objectives set forth by senior management, while specifically supporting the Geotechnical and Construction Materials Testing departments. 






Job Responsibilities:
  • Provide senior technical oversight and expertise on complex proposals and projects
  • Examine engineering reports, lot letters and field recommendations produced by field staff
  • Provide recommendations leadership, mentorship and guidance other engineers and project managers throughout the company
  • Generate reports, recommendations and other documentation needed by clients, including engineering and design
  • Conduct site meetings, site estimates, and project recommendations for prospective and current clients
  • Create, prepare and update project proposals and technical reports in a timely manner
  • Work with company’s senior management to improve consistency and efficiency in reporting procedures
  • Provide guidance to project managers regarding engineering problems or client interactions
  • Develop and manage projects with new and existing clients, ensuring profitability
  • Participate in business development, networking and marketing
  • Travel to various job sites in a company provided vehicle
  • Review, update and approve invoices weekly for on-going projects
  • Maintain excellent communication both verbally and electronically with senior management, project managers and colleagues
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality and integrity
  • Follow all company safety procedures and policies
  • Other tasks as assigned


Qualifications & Skills:
  • Required:
  • Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record
  • 4-year Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university
  • Professional Engineering license (PE) in NC & SC with the ability to obtain additional state licenses as needed
  • 15-25 years of Geotechnical and/or CMT full-time work experience
  • Preferred:
  • Knowledge or certification in radiation safety
  • Active certifications in ACI Concrete, ICC Special Inspections, OSHA 10-hour, NCDOT/SCDOT Roadway, Earthworks, Concrete
  • Active Asbestos license in NC/SC
  • Active Well Driller’s license
  • Active Erosion Control Inspector classes/certification

  • Skills:
  • Knowledge of geotechnical and construction materials testing methods, ASTM standards, and soil classifications
  • Ability to calculate results from geotechnical/construction materials testing data
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents
  • Ability to accurately complete field-testing paperwork and detailed figures
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to write technical reports, proposals, business correspondences and/or procedure manuals as needed
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, detailed reports, short correspondence and memos
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite, Boring Log software, AutoCAD and other engineering design software, deep foundation software, slope stability software, laboratory software and settlement software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to use technology/computer
  • Strong leadership skills and an eye for detail
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel


Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
  • Days and hours for this position are typically Monday-Friday
  • Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments
  • Field work on outside construction sites involving long-term standing, sitting and potentially repetitive motions
  • Typically, this position involves 80% office work, 20% field work, depending on the week/work
  • Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus), smell, hear and touch (use your hands to reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit)
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50lbs.
  • You may be required to drive hundreds of miles per day within the Mid-Atlantic region
  • Some weekend, overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required
