Job Description

General Summary

This position is based out of the Harford County Region of Maryland with some coverage and responsibilities from time to time covering the entire UM Urgent Care platform.

In addition to performing direct patient care in accordance with their full or part-time agreement, the Advanced Practice Clinical Lead ‘APCL’ directly supervises assigned advanced practice providers ‘APPs’ [nurse practitioners and physician assistants.] The APCL oversees the clinical care delivery provided by the APPs in order to ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, patient care, focused on achieving an outstanding patient experience and patient satisfaction outcomes.  The APCL serves as a clinical leader, working closely with the Regional Medical Director ‘RMD’ and CMO in the processes of procurement of new providers including provider onboarding, engagement, training and role modeling clinical excellence.

Principle Responsibilities and Tasks


The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.  These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified. The APCL excels as a leader of their team by exemplifying the qualities of a high achieving provider: takes initiative, is resourceful, works efficiently, is an excellent communicator, and is driven by the opportunity to serve their patients and make a difference in the communities we serve. The APCL strives for excellence in the areas of patient clinical quality and patient safety, and places great emphasis on accountability, growth and continuous improvement. The APCL must have excellent communication skills, be detail oriented, and organized.

  1. Provides supervision to APP direct reports, completing routine performance reviews (including coaching providers in areas where improvement is required), chart reviews, attendance at quarterly meetings, active, ongoing provider engagement, mentorship with a focus on continuous performance improvement.
  2. Creates and delivers performance improvement plans and corrective actions with leadership review.
  3. Completes new provider candidate interviews and participates in candidate selection with support of the RMD.
  4. Supports center-level clinical responsibilities pertaining to providers; ensures charts are completed and signed-off timely, final laboratory results are resolved, work-queues cleared, patient messages answered and X-rays signed off. Oversees clinical care best practices implementation.
  5. Aligns with CMO and RMD measuring quality and safety metrics including the reporting of identified clinical outcomes. Collaborates effectively with the CMO and RMD in the development and integration of new clinical initiatives.
  6. Supports new provider onboarding and training: EHR competencies, clinical and patient experience best practices,  clinical practice (i.e. pre-operative physicals, worker’s comp), and safety practices.  In collaboration with operational leadership, CMO and RMD supports the patient experience training program for assigned providers and dedicated centers.
  7. Leads weekly safety huddles and monthly provider clinical case review sessions. Participates in weekly market medical/provider leadership meetings with CMO and RMD; reviews policies, procedures, and process improvement initiatives on an ongoing basis.
  8. Reviews and resolves low to moderate complexity patient complaints where standard of care is met. Reports instances where standard of care is not met. to the RMD for review.
  9. Champions patient and teammate safety, identifies risks in processes and takes action to mitigate and report findings.
  10. Supports UMUC clinical committees: medical therapeutics and supplies committees. Supports provider engagement and team-building activities.
  11. Part-time or full-time exempt status as an APP clinician with UMUC working between 6-12 direct patient care, clinical shifts/ month
  12. APCL will work administratively approximately 3 hours/center weekly, for each clinical location the APCL oversees.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant educational program approved by the State Board of Licensing or found by the Board to be substantially equivalent to the programs in Maryland required.
  • Maintains active unrestricted NP or PAc medical license in good standing in the state of Maryland  
  • Must have at least one year of clinical experience as an advanced practice provider: emergency medicine, urgent care medicine, family practice, or internal medicine preferred.
  • Must be working with UM Urgent Care for at least one year, preferably in an exempt (FT or PT capacity)
  • Current BLS certification or obtained prior to providing direct patient care is required.
  • Maintains active, unrestricted DEA license and CDS
  • Candidates for the Advanced Practitioner Clinical Lead position must have an exemplary record, demonstrating consistent clinical and patient experience excellence.  
  • In good standing with the organization – no current disciplinary actions
  • Strong communication and organizational leadership skills including use of technology to facilitate communications 
  • Ability to lift 15-30 lbs.
  • Required to move from one location to another within and outside of the building.
  • Push, pull, reach and bend as needed to treat patients, as needed.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
