Salary:NegotiableACADEMIC (9 months)Job Summary:As part of a group hire supported by the John S. and James L.Knight Foundation and the College of Letters and Science atUW-Madison, The University of Wisconsin-Madison's School ofJournalism and Mass Communication, Department of Political Scienceand the Department of Psychology seek two full-time AssistantProfessors beginning August 18, 2025, with a demonstratedcommitment to excellence in research and teaching and an emphasison communication, social identity and civil society. Eachsuccessful candidate's tenure home will be in one of the threeparticipating departments, or some combination of the three, inconsultation with the candidates. As such, the selected candidatewill teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in one ofthree, or some combination of the three, departments/schools: theSchool of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Department ofPolitical Science and/or the Department of Psychology. Thesuccessful candidate will advance the educational mission of theCollege of Letters & Science, that values, prioritizes, andactualizes evidence-based and student-centered teaching and(undergraduate student) mentoring. They will contribute to aninclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagementand a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and membersof the broader community.We seek to strengthen our cutting-edge research, teaching, andpractice concerning issues of communication, social identity, andcivil society. We are particularly interested in scholars studyingone or more of the following issues: 1) communication ecologies,social structure, and civic life; 2) political discourse,contentious politics, and democratic health; and 3) socialidentity, social and racial injustice, and conflicts over politicalpower and social respect. The successful candidate will join acommunity of productive scholars who value a wide variety ofconceptual, methodological, and analytical perspectives including,but not limited to: quantitative observation, qualitativefieldwork, content analysis, survey analysis, experimentalresearch, computational analysis, archival research, fieldinterventions, translational and implementation work, and emergingartificial intelligence techniques.Responsibilities:The successful candidate, as a member of the College of L&S,will proactively contribute to, support, and advance the college'scommitment to equity among all aspects of their teaching,mentoring, research, and service. In addition to developing andmaintaining a robust research portfolio in the area(s) ofcommunication, social identity, and civil society, the successfulapplicant will mentor highly motivated master's and doctoralstudents in this area of high demand and societal impact.Successful candidates will be expected to participate in theresearch mission of the Center for Communication and Civic Renewalat UW-Madison.
