SummaryAbout the Position: APower Plant Senior Mechanic has the responsibility for planning, organizing, directing and participating in the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of all mechanical equipment at a hydroelectric power project which consists of a powerhouse, switchyards, dam or dams and related works.Learn more about this agencyHelpDuties• Maintains records and data in connection with all mechanical maintenance and repair work referring to such records as applicable on subsequent operations.• Disassemble and assembles major components of large rotating apparatus such as generators, turbines, gates, etc.• Suggests ways of improving performance of subordinates and trains employees in what is to be done and how it is to be done by demonstrating proper methods and procedures.• Practices and enforces adherence to rules and regulations of the District Safety Program covering on-the-job conduct, good housekeeping, care of equipment, fire prevention and various other safety precautions.• Furnishes special technical and practical guidance to trainees participating training programs for powerplant personnel.• Operates hydroelectric generators from the control room manually, starting units, synchronizing, loading, and tying into the system.HelpRequirementsConditions of Employment• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.• The duties of this position require the incumbent to pass pre-employment and regular physical screenings to determine fitness for duty.• Dependent upon location this position is a Testing Designated Position under the U. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) POWER PLANT SENIOR MECHANIC without more than normal supervision.Ability To Do The Work of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to perform the most difficult and complex Power Plant Senior Mechanic tasks including installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment and systems such as generators, turbines, governors, pumps, and compressors at hydroelectric powerplant, steam generating plant, nuclear plant, or commercial heavy industrial plant..orAbility to perform the full range of Power Plant Senior Mechanic tasks including diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining mechanical power generation systems and instructing subordinate employees and trainees on proper performance of this work.orAbility to perform common duties such as operating various shop equipment; inspecting equipment, repairing equipment, installing equipment, and recognizing safety hazards; and completing assignments assigned by journey level employees.• Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.• Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision• Ability to Lead or Supervise• Ability to Plan and Organize Work• Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment• Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment• Physical Effort - Handle objects weighing 20 kilograms (45 pounds) and lifting and operating heavy and awkward hand tools. Many tasks require significant brute force. The incumbent is required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time.• Working Conditions - Work is primarily performed inside the power plant, outlet works, intake structures, and spillway structure where constant noise and vibration of generating equipment is present. Hazards include moving machinery, working on preheated metals, danger of injury from burns, cuts, dust, welding fumes, and flying particles of metal when performing chipping, Grinding, and welding. There may be occasional exposure to electrical shock hazards. Often works in cramped quarters for extended periods of time. Subject to falls from scaffolds and ladders, hazards of paring cables or slings and overhead traveling cranes and exposure to working in cold damp areas.
