About Us

The University System of Georgia (USG) is comprised of 26 higher education institutions as well as the University System Office (USO). Within the USO, our administrative operations are primarily housed in the Trinity Washington Building located in downtown Atlanta. Our Information Technology Services (ITS) division is located in Athens.

Location

All placements besides Information Technology Services interns will be located in the USO downtown Atlanta office (270 Washington Street SW). ITS interns will be located in Athens, Georgia.

Job Summary

The University System of Georgia (USG) central office provides students with paid internship opportunities to develop professional skills, learn about the operations of the state’s public higher education system, and earn valuable work experience.


The internship program offers placements each semester supporting several divisions in the system office, including executive leadership, external affairs, government relations, communications and marketing, information technology and security, and internal audit and accounting.


Interns may be eligible for academic credit through their enrolled USG institution/academic advisor. Opportunities are open to both undergraduate and graduate students in any major/field of study. Work schedules for part-time interns are determined based on students’ availability and course schedules. Full-time internship opportunities are also available.


Please note placements in Information Technology Services are open to Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Security, Cybersecurity or Business Administration related majors. Placements in Internal Audit and Accounting are open to accounting majors. All other placements are open to all majors.

Responsibilities

External Affairs and Government Relations interns will be based in Atlanta, Georgia, and are responsible for activities such as research, data compilation, attending meetings, monitoring legislative hearings, bill tracking, general administrative duties and assisting in the planning of special events. Interns will be based in the Chancellor’s office and support multiple divisions within the executive leadership team.


Communications and Marketing interns will be based in Atlanta, Georgia, and are responsible for assisting with news and media tracking, drafting correspondence, statements, and memos, photo editing, basic graphic design, social media tracking and analytics, and general administrative duties.


Information Technology Services (ITS) interns will be based in Athens, Georgia, and are responsible for working with computing infrastructure, Database Administration, ERP Application, Security, and PC support team members in resolving issues and assisting with projects such as researching customer software issues and developing, maintaining, or modifying new or existing scripts, API integrations, or specialized utility programs. Interns with cybersecurity interests will also have an opportunity to work with the system’s Information Security team.


Internal Audit and Accounting interns will be based in Atlanta, Georgia, and are responsible for activities such as accounting research, risk assessments, reviewing annual financial statements, various report reviews as recommended by the Office of Internal Audits, assisting with audit and consulting engagements, providing support for the annual formulation of the system-wide audit plan, researching and interpreting federal regulations, the Georgia Code, BOR/USG Policy, and institutional procedures to determine applicability to the audit subject, developing test procedures to verify compliance, testing execution of internal controls over critical business processes and recommending cost-effective controls to address identified weaknesses, attend meetings, and performing related duties as assigned and providing technical accounting and internal audit assistance as needed.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must be enrolled in a University System of Georgia institution and completed two years of college prior to applying. Students must be in good academic standing to be considered.
