Variety: Senior Music Writer

Variety is adding a Senior Music Writer to be based in our Los Angeles newsroom (hybrid work schedule, in office Monday/Tuesday/Thursday). The Senior Music Writer will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in music news/feature writing and reporting with significant contacts and relationships with executives, talent representatives and creatives in the music industry.

We are seeking:

• an understanding of the music business and the broader entertainment industry to write at a sophisticated level
• a self-starter in generating stories, responding to breaking news
• a flair for storytelling
• a strong and versatile reporter and writer able to move easily between breaking news and features
• must be comfortable writing/posting news stories quickly
• must be able to handle writing two-three news stories a day in addition to long-term assignments
• can generate enterprise editorial ideas, live event and franchise opportunities for Variety across all platforms.
• is proficient in live media moderating, on-camera interviews and speaking appearances for Variety events and on behalf of Variety for other media/events
• is collaborative with other reporters and editors
• is meticulous on details, accuracy and fairness in reporting
• has strong time management skills and is able to juggle long-term and quick turnaround reporting and writing assignments

Typical wage range: $90k - $110k. Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role. The typical candidate is hired below midpoint of the range. The total compensation package for this position will also include other elements, a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits including 401(k) eligibility and paid time off benefits.
