You'll join a team of innovative thinkers who love to experiment, collaborate, and win together. We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of automation, biology, computing, robotics, design, and user experience to benefit our customers and the world.


The Senior Systems Integration Engineer will report to the Head of Application Development and will be leading the pipettor fluidics and layouts team. You’ll own the development of all liquid handling workflows, layouts and kits across all upcoming applications currently identified in our product portfolio. Collaborating closely with application development, manufacturing and software engineering teams, you’ll tackle complex challenges, optimize processes, and implement scalable solutions to expand platform capabilities.


This is a critical role that combines strategic vision with hands-on execution—ideal for a builder-type who thrives on making a visible impact in a growing team.


Day-to-Day Responsibilities & First Year Expectations:
  • Lead Automated Liquid Handling Development: Design, test, and optimize liquid handling workflows and parameters (liquid classes).
  • Create and refine deck layouts and reagent volumes for NGS workflows, ensuring seamless integration with kit development and manufacturing.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: partner with  Application Development team members, R&D, and manufacturing teams to gather requirements and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Identify and implement new features/enhancements in collaboration with software teams.
  • Maintain detailed records to inform decisions and ensure cross-team transparency.

Within 3 Months, You’ll…
  • Complete onboarding, gain a foundational understanding of automated liquid handling on Callisto and our overarching approach to genomic assay development on the platform.
  • Understand Volta’s Application Product Development Process (PDP) and its phases, focusing on how pipettor fluidics, reagent/deck layouts, and kit manufacturing integrate into application development.
  • Lead key pipettor fluidics tasks, refining liquid classes and collaborating with the app dev team to design and optimize workflows for NGS applications.

By 6 Months, You’ll…
  • Independent ownership of pipettor fluidics and layout developmentHands-on work to develop and refine liquid handling for accuracy, precision, and speed.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex liquid handling challenges independently, applying creative problem-solving to optimize workflows and improve efficiency.
  • Identify optimizations, collaborating with app dev and software teams.
  • Understand the scalability needs of the platform, working proactively to ensure pipettor fluidics and layouts support long-term growth.

At 12+ Months, You’ll…
  • Drive key feature developments to optimize liquid handling for performance, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Shape the strategic direction of pipettor fluidics and layouts to support long-term platform growth.


Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience with liquid handling systems (e.g., Tecan, opentrons OT-2)
  • Basic programming skills (Linux, beginner-level Python)
  • Background in designing and optimizing automated workflowsKnowledge of statistics (R, Python, or similar)
  • Experience managing cross-functional projects from scoping to execution.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills
  • Strong documentation and communication skills (ELN management)
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Self-motivated, organized, and adaptable to fast-paced, changing priorities
  • Master’s or PhD (preferred) in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, or related fieldRelevant experience in systems integration, automation, or laboratory technologies (preferably in life sciences)

Nice-to-Haves:
  • Experience scaling systems for performance and efficiency
  • Knowledge of integrating custom solutions into workflows
  • Familiarity with machine learning/statistical models
  • Experience in genomic assay development (NGS)Proficiency with version control (Git) and CI/CD workflows


This is a full-time position that requires a significant amount of in-person work and collaboration onsite at our Seaport Office in Boston, MA. If you are unable to relocate or commute to the Boston MA area, this role won't be a match.
