Senior Technical Program Manager, Autonomous Driving Performance Evaluation

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World’s Most Experienced Driver™—to improve everyone's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.

At Waymo, we are mission-driven and believe deeply in the opportunity of autonomous driving technology to improve mobility and make people's lives better. We are united by purpose and responsibility (for our employees and riders alike). We are looking for kind, committed, employees who have integrity, dream big, work together as one team and create a sense of belonging for one another that is the foundation of our culture. We want each team member to feel welcomed and included in every step of our exciting journey.

Technical Program Manager

This hybrid role will report to a Director of Technical Program Management.

Waymo’s Technical Program Managers are accountable for Waymo’s roadmap execution by providing thoughtful cross-functional planning, clarity, and proactive risk management. In the face of complex technical and operational challenges with no established playbooks to follow, we act with thoughtful urgency, driving conversations, discussions, and outcomes. Our team partners closely with every function of Waymo to structure, own and drive work towards real-world deployments of the Waymo Driver across platforms and geographies.

In this role you'll:

  • Own and drive detailed schedule and timeline for performance evaluation methodologies and implementation in your programs to meet our monthly, quarterly and yearly evaluation goals
  • Help engineering teams remove barriers and gain clarity on priorities
  • Communicate to management results from execution, risks and path forward
  • Connect parallel conversations across the organization to remove duplication and ensure optimal use of time and resources
  • Educate multiple audiences about current state of evaluation technology and value delivered in upcoming milestones
  • Influence multiple teams to optimize collaboration between Product, onboard software, simulation, and systems engineering teams

At a minimum we’d like you to have:

  • STEM education or industry experience
  • Project management experience managing large scale portfolios: multiple concurrent projects, large engineering teams, high matrix environments
  • 4+ years of experience in technical program management
  • Practical experience launching products and services commercially
  • Technical judgement is required to be able to effectively participate in tactical and strategic conversations to guide complicated programs, reduce chaos and uncertainty, and deliver clear messaging. Understanding the technology is critical for gaining trust with the engineers, then leveraging accumulated knowledge to drive success for the long term
  • TPMs are expected to tactically manage their programs by designing artifacts like spreadsheets to show timelines, progress, risks, and reduce uncertainty

It’s preferred if you have:

  • Computer science background
  • Statistical education (ML, DS, Math)
  • Prior experience with autonomous driving
  • Prior experience with software simulation and testing tools
  • Practical understanding of systems engineering and safety frameworks and methodologies
