Yelp engineering culture is driven by our values: we’re a cooperative team that values individual authenticity and encourages creative solutions to problems. All new engineers deploy working code their first week, and we strive to broaden individual impact with support from managers, mentors, and teams. At the end of the day, we’re all about helping our users, growing as engineers, and having fun... in a collaborative environment.
Do you want to help drive efficient, profitable, and cost-effective cloud infrastructure at Yelp? As a Site Reliability Engineer on the Cloud Economics team, you will play a key role in Yelp’s overall cloud cost management. You will build tools to generate reports and monitor cost anomalies to help Product and Engineering teams discover cost optimization opportunities, and to promote FinOps practices in order to maximize the value from our infrastructure investments. Without the Cloud Economics team, Yelp could not ensure accurate attribution nor communicate the return on investment (ROI) of our cloud expenses.
The Cloud Economics team works in both the dev and systems worlds, implementing key strategies and tools within the core architecture. Our Cloud FinOps practices benefit and support Engineering, Product, and Finance at Yelp. We get to solve interesting challenges that you can only find at the kind of scale that serves over 100 million users per month.
This opportunity is fully remote and does not require you to be located in any particular area in Canada. We welcome applicants from throughout Canada. We’d love to have you apply, even if you don’t feel you meet every single requirement in this posting. At Yelp, we’re looking for great people, not just those who simply check off all the boxes.
• Work closely with Yelp Engineering teams in a showback model to implement cost attribution for multi-tenant platforms and systems across Yelp.
• Create and roll out tooling, alerting, monitoring and reporting systems to showback cloud usage and costs to cloud users.
• Develop custom tools when off-the-shelf solutions don’t work at our scale, and contribute upstream to open source projects.
• Prepare monthly cloud cost analyses and reports for Yelp’s Finance and Accounting teams.
• Leverage CloudHealth and/or AWS Cost Explorer to make cost optimization recommendations.
• Automate everything with Python, Puppet, Git, Jenkins, and Terraform.
• Foster and build a fun, diverse, and inclusive culture that reflects Yelp’s values.
• Ideally 3+ work experience, or an equivalent educational background Command of your favorite modern programming language: Python, Ruby, Go, Rust, Java, Javascript, C++, etc.
• Experience with public cloud platforms (we use AWS, but Azure/GCP are fine) and related tooling (Terraform, etc.).
• Strong software development, scripting and automation skills.
• Solid mathematical and data analytics skills.
• Excellent communication and documentation skills
