Public Health Nurse, Bureau of Environmental Disease and Injury Prevention

OPEN TO PERMANENT PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Division of Environmental Health works to prevent and control illness and injury related to environmental and occupational health risks through outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement. With staff of 1,000, the Division covers a broad range of subject matter, including oversight of environmental investigations, lead poisoning, injury prevention, occupational health, food safety, childcare, radiation control, recreational and drinking water quality, air quality, climate health, vector control, veterinary public health and pest control.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
- Provides care coordination for lead poisoned children and pregnant individuals
- Identify possible lead hazards in the environment of lead-poisoned children and pregnant individuals and recommends ways to limit their lead exposure
- Participate in the development and implementation of measures to prevent lead exposure
- Provide information to the public and medical community on lead poisoning prevention
- Perform other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Experience in public health nursing
- Experience working with families with young children
- Experience working with pregnant women
- Possess excellent interpersonal written and oral communication skills
- Detailed oriented with outstanding organizational skills
- Ability to multi-task
- Computer literate.

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE - 51011

1. A Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing from a regionally-accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices;
and
2. A license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Medical Requirement: Medical guidelines have been established for the position of Public Health Nurse. Candidates will be examined to determine whether they can perform the essential functions of the position of Public Health Nurse.
