POSITION SUMMARY

Marathon Petroleum’s Robinson, Illinois refinery is seeking full-time Shift Emergency Response Officers (Fire & Rescue).  Position reports to the IRD Fire Chief and is responsible for refinery fire prevention/protection, emergency response to incidents (fire, medical or other), emergency response equipment inspections, and other associated inspections of emergency equipment.

Position provides technical expertise and support for Emergency Response Team (ERT), emergency preparedness and response programs including fire, Haz-Mat, rescue, and medical response.

Position is required to work a rotating 12 hr. day/night shift schedule, respond to call-outs and work overtime as needed.

This position is eligible for relocation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support emergency preparedness activities, ensuring regulatory compliance, achievement of department goals and initiatives and establishing expectations of behavior for the safety culture in the refinery.

  • Complete responsibilities of Fire Chief in their absence.

  • Respond to and serve as initial Incident Commander until relieved by ERT Fire Chief or Officer on all emergency responses in the refinery including fires, leaks, rescue, Haz-Mat, medical and spill incidents.

  • Support development and facilitation of emergency planning and response drills, including employee incipient and first responder operations fire training programs.

  • Become and serve as an instructor for necessary industrial fire, rescue, hazmat, First Aid, AED and CPR training as related to protection of the Refinery.

  • Support development of the volunteer all-hazard emergency response team (ERT) organization and establishment of field incident command protocol, emergency response and incident command plans.

  • Support required testing and maintenance of the emergency mobile apparatus, associated equipment and fixed fire detection and suppression systems as recommended by the manufacturer.

  • Perform inspection, testing and maintenance of safety and emergency response equipment.

  • Remain informed of current fire and emergency response regulations, trends and technical advances in extinguishing agents, appliances and techniques of fire control and training.

  • Support completion and retention of all necessary refinery and governmental records related to fire protection and ERT training.

  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum (Required) Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Emergency preparedness and response experience.

  • A valid driver’s license.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.

  • Must pursue and complete State Paramedic license within 3 years of employment and maintain certification in good standing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fire Department and/or EMS experience.

  • Knowledge of ERT and safety & health procedures.

  • State Licensed Paramedic.

  • State Level or Pro Board Professional Firefighter Certification.

  • State Level or Pro Board Fire Safety Instructor.

  • Experience in refining, petrochemical, or LNG industry.

  • Experience supporting/familiarity with incident command system (ICS) response structure. 

Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, OneNote) is preferred. 

  • Strong coordination skills, demonstrated through successful interdisciplinary project management (crafts, operations, environmental, inspection, engineering). 

  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with both frontline workers and leadership.

  • Experience and/or comfort with presenting training material in both hands on and classroom settings.

  • Self-motivated, good time management, and mechanically inclined.

Physical Requirements

  • Complete emergency response work performed at ground level and at heights (up to 200 feet) on concrete, metal grating, gravel, asphalt and piping surfaces, while climbing over 75 feet, lifting 40 pounds plus, carrying 20-30 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 250 pounds with mechanical assistance and working in confined spaces, wearing proper safety equipment, including a self-contained breathing apparatus as necessary, use hand tools, and work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.

Travel Expected: Up to 10% related to training, certification and response.
