Technical Program Manager, Infrastructure Foundations

About the Team

The Infrastructure Foundations team delivers specialized infrastructure tailored explicitly to OpenAI’s demanding research and product workloads. We build foundational infrastructure, from physical datacenter selection and hardware procurement to network design, driven by clear, intuitive understanding of current and future workloads.

About the Role

We're hiring an autonomous Technical Program Manager who can independently define and execute foundational infrastructure initiatives. This role blends strategic insight and hands-on execution, requiring you to directly translate technical workload needs into tangible infrastructure solutions—spanning datacenter site selection, hardware decisions, networking architecture, and strategic vendor engagement. You will own end-to-end responsibility until handing off execution to specialized downstream teams.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

Responsibilities:

  • Independently define infrastructure roadmaps based on intuitive, precise understanding of engineering and research workload needs.

  • Drive datacenter selection, hardware procurement, networking architecture, and vendor partnerships based directly on technical workloads.

  • Closely collaborate with engineering, research, finance, vendor management, and datacenter operations teams, clearly managing handoffs and scope boundaries.

  • Execute autonomously from strategic definition to the point of handoff to downstream teams, communicating clearly without needing oversight.

  • Maintain precise technical intuition, identifying pragmatic solutions to complex, ambiguous infrastructure problems.

You might thrive in this role if you have:

  • Deep technical experience from prior infrastructure, engineering, TPM, or product management roles.

  • Demonstrated capability to independently drive ambiguous, end-to-end infrastructure projects with minimal guidance.

  • Proven intuitive understanding of translating complex technical demands directly into actionable infrastructure outcomes.

  • Clear, effective communication skills, partnering with diverse technical and operational stakeholders.

  • A practical, self-driven approach focused on tangible execution rather than traditional management or structured oversight.
