Summary:

The Chaplain provides interfaith, non-denominational, spiritual care services in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and spiritual care program coordinator or with medical director and/or attending physician’s approval in many programs for patients at many Rogers Memorial Hospital locations. This position requires an individual who can work in a pluralistic, spiritual environment respecting the diversity of religious institutions, organizations and beliefs represented by our patient population. Due to the fact the vast majority of our patient population that requests spiritual care services identify themselves as Christians, it would be prudent for this individual to have theological training and experience, and/or training in a clinical environment.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
 

Clinical role with patients.

  • Conduct and document spiritual assessments in the electronic health record.
  • Develop and update the treatment plan, as needed.
  • Develop and lead reflections for various programs.
  • Perform spiritual care consultations.
  • Lead spirituality lectures and spiritual growth groups.
  • Lead Communion.
     

Staff communication and collaboration (related to patients requesting spiritual care services).

  • Attend staffing when possible.
  • Attend all-staff meetings at manager’s request.
  • Collaborate and communicate with therapists and counselors.
  • Develop and lead spiritual educational forums for staff.
  • Lead spiritual care committee meetings, as requested.
  • Be available to respond to spiritual needs of staff requesting services.
     

Develop community relations and resources.

  • Organize off-site service attendance, per patient request.
  • Organize on-site services as directed.
  • Assist with maintenance of the chapel library.
  • Assist in discharge planning.
  • Speak at ‘Family & Friends’ and alumni events as requested.
  • Coordinate services offered by local clergy as needed.
  • Be a liaison between Rogers and supporting local churches.
  • Speak at fundraising events as requested.
  • Under the direction of the Spiritual Care coordinator and in collaboration with the RMH Foundation, cultivate new and existing donor relationships. This may also involve:
    • collaborating with the Foundation to assist in creating a Spiritual Care advisory group to assist with a fund-raising subcommittee that would organize presentations with key donors, as well as organize special fund-raising events.
    • writing grants which will provide funding to the Spiritual Care program.
    • other duties as assigned.

Assist in promoting a team atmosphere by treating individuals with respect and honesty and by using direct communication and active listening skills.

Promote department goals as well as the mission of the hospital.

  • Establish, deepen, and provide closure to pastoral relationships with sensitivity.
  • Provide effective pastoral support that contributes to the well-being of patients, their families, and staff as appropriate.
  • Provide pastoral care that respects diversity and differences including, but not limited to culture, gender, sexual orientation, and spiritual/religious practices.
  • Provide spiritual/religious resources appropriate to the care of patients, families, and staff.
  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate spiritual practices appropriate to diverse settings and needs.
  • Communicate goals to fellow staff members.
  • Demonstrate measurable goal achievement.
  • Maintain department policies and procedures.
  • Include requirements and guidelines from external agencies (i.e., Joint Commission, State of Wisconsin).
  • Maintain and/or communicate to appropriate party function backlog at a set time.
  • Educate new staff regarding regulations or requirements of those functions that relate to their areas or departments, as directed.
  • Demonstrate acceptance and training of student interns in the department, as directed.
     

Demonstrate understanding of Joint Commission and other regulatory agency compliance regulations.

  • Involve self in the learning and application of standards relevant to the marketing department.
  • Participate in in-services, seminars, and other meetings to increase involvement and awareness of regulations.
  • Involve self in the education of other disciplines regarding the marketing department’s regulations.
  • Participate in hospital committees, performance improvement team meetings, and team projects, as directed.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and preparedness.

  • Function within the common code of ethics for chaplains.
  • Promote the integration of spiritual care into a secular organization.
  • Articulate an understanding of institutional culture and systems.
  • Support, promote and encourage ethical decision-making and care.
  • Demonstrate organizational skills that promote timely response to all inquiries and to task completion.
  • Communicate with all individuals in a positive and professional manner.
  • Attempt to resolve individual issues with peers in a positive, calm manner, with a focus on solution.
  • Communicate concerns and provide solutions for same.
  • Attend outside seminars and/or educational classes to promote professional growth.
  • Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude toward parties outside the hospital (provider relations representatives, managed care contractors, visitors, vendors, etc.).
  • Comply with the hospital’s policies and procedures, including human resources, infection control, and employee health policies and programs.
  • Project a professional image by wearing appropriate, professional attire.

Additional Job Description:

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Function with a great deal of autonomy.
  • Able to travel by car.
  • Verbal and hearing ability required to interact with patients and employees. Numerical ability required to maintain records and operate a computer.
  • Work in a pluralistic environment, respecting the diversity of religious institutions, organizations and beliefs represented by our patient population.
  • Must be able to read and communicate through written, verbal and auditory skills and abilities.
  • Physically/Mentally able to perform job duties as verified by a physical exam by a licensed physician, per post-employment physical.
     

Education/Training Requirements:

  • Minimum of Bachelor degree in Human Services, Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or related field of study; Master degree preferred, or working toward a Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or related field of study.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in chaplaincy, ministry or lay ministry in a Christian church or organization OR Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) units.
  • Clinical experience in a behavioral health organization preferred.
  • American Heart Association CPR certification within thirty (30) days of hire. Bi-annual re-certification is required. 
  • Training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) within sixty (60) days of hire/transfer. Annual re-certification is required. 
  • Complete all Community Based Residential Facilities and Residential Care Center (CBRF/ RCC) training, as requested.
  • Complete the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) training, as requested.
  • Computer proficiency and working knowledge of software programs, including Windows packages.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license. Must be granted insurable status by the Rogers Memorial Hospital insurance policy.
