Summary

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) provides support to the Director of Nursing (DON) to plan, coordinate and manage the nursing department and resident care and services. The ADON is responsible to oversee and participate in the Infection Control and Restorative Programs.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Supervision of nursing care provided by registered nursed, licensed vocational/practical nurses and others for whom they are administratively or professionally responsible. 
  • Assists in carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizational policies and applicable laws. 
  • Supervisory responsibilities may include but are not limited to: 
  • Assists in interviewing, hiring selection and training of new employees. 
  • Plans, assigns, and directs work. 
  • Oversees work assignments, taking into consideration resident safety, the educational preparation, experience, knowledge, and ability of the persons to whom the assignments are made. 
  • Assures staffing levels are met to meet the safety needs of residents. 
  • Transfers employees among units as needed. 
  • Assists in the approval of the correction of errors in timecards or other timekeeping records. 
  • Authorizes overtime as necessary. 
  • Receives and resolves employee complaints. 
  • Promotes primary assignments to support primary nursing care. 
  • Monitors and corrects job performance of employees where necessary. 
  • Oversees facility in absence of higher-ranking clinical leaders. The ADON assumes responsibility for the nursing department in the absence of the DON 
  • Uses independent judgment and discretion on behalf of the organization in the performance of these duties

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing. Preferred bachelor’s degree or higher. Strongly preferred to have a current state license to practice as a practical nurse (LPN). Current CPR certification desired.  
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in long term care management. Prefer long term care experience as a floor nurse or like position.  
  • Excellent understanding of state and federal regulations governing skilled nursing facilities. 
  • Ability to lead, motivate, educate, and evaluate others. 
  • Must have excellent assessment, planning, organization, communication, and interpersonal skills with an understanding of person-centered care. 
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including periodic weekends, holidays, and off shifts. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with team members and outside vendors, clients, other third parties. 
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to communicate verbally and through written reports and other documents relating to resident, staff, and others. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of executives, managers, clients, customers, and the public. 
  • Ability to define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical journals and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.??
