Job Summary
This is a salaried Kelp Restoration Dive Technician position in the Martone Lab.
Organizational Status
The technician will report to the PI, Dr. Patrick Martone.
Work Performed
Create SCUBA dive plan and dive schedule with the support of UBC Dive Safety Officer; coordinate with divers and boat drivers to lead a dive team on subtidal field excursions.
Plan and perform field experiments to outplant lab-grown kelp and measure kelp performance; troubleshoot problems; collect, record, analyse and interpret experimental results.
Liaise between UBC and industry partners to organize field work; write reports and present experimental results; support grant writing initiatives.
Coordinate with lab technicians and graduate students to link lab-based kelp aquaculture activities to field research.
Research and purchase supplies and equipment to support field projects.
Coordinate, monitor and ensure the implementation and enforcement of field safety rules and procedures.
Carry out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
All work being done will be under close supervision by the PI, Dr. Patrick Martone, and all decisions about experimental procedures will be made in cohort with the PI, Dr. Patrick Martone.
Supervision Received
Works in a team environment, but under the direct supervision of the PI, Dr. Patrick Martone, who provides written instructions and timelines for the completion of tasks.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Certified scientific diver
Demonstrated knowledge of seaweed biology
Experience conducting lab and field experiments, preferably with seaweeds
