Job Description

BENEFITS

Position Purpose: 

Perform field operations of collection and/or distribution systems; and new system installations to ensure effective system performance in compliance with all regulatory agencies.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Operate sewer/storm/distribution equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Said equipment shall include but not be limited to SCADA, pumps, CCTV equipment, high-pressure flushing equipment, weed cutters, and other standard sewer collection and/or distribution equipment as needed to inspect, clean, and maintain both collection and/or distribution systems.
  • Performs routine, and/or emergency inspections of collection and/or distribution system as determined by the CMOM program and/or management and in accordance with established programs and policies including but not limited to NASSCO PACP/MACP. Examples of routine work activities include but not limited to manhole inspections, cctv survey, smoke testing, etc.
  • Ability to record all work activities into an established (CMMS) computer management and maintenance system/program in accordance with established programs and policies.
  • Perform routine inspection and operation and maintenance activities of the remote pump stations and assist with remote monitoring using SCADA as directed.
  • Performs preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on equipment according to vendor specifications. This includes routine lubrication of equipment and motors, replacing oil reserves, and obtaining necessary parts through established procedures.
  • Performs groundskeeping requirements for example but not limited to snow removal, landscaping, easement clearing, painting, etc. as directed.
  • Perform work in a safe and professional manner by following established safety, operating, and emergency response procedures.
  • Ability to perform confined space entries as part of routine work activities such as wet well cleaning and manhole entries as may be required.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, electromechanical, and hydraulic equipment using tools and gauges of the trade.
  • Perform repairs to all departmental equipment including, but not limited to mechanical, hydraulic, computer, software, and electrical components. Examples of these include CCTV repair to tractor, camera, coaxial cable, cable reel; generator; bypass trash pump; flushing truck; vactor truck; etc.
  • Inspects field equipment and becomes proficient at mechanical troubleshooting to determine repairs needed. Dismantles equipment to gain access to and repairs defective parts using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring and testing devices. Re-assembles and tests equipment ensuring safe and efficient operating condition is restored. Learns to troubleshoot hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic equipment and instrumentation.
  • Assists with sewer inspections including laterals, manhole repairs, and other related system improvements as may be directed.
  • Performs fat, oils, and grease (FOG’s) inspections within commercial industries in accordance with established policy and programs as directed.
  • May assist in other areas of the field systems as directed.

Work Environment:

  • Working hours Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:00pm.
  • Requires working in outside and inside environments with noise and all temperatures and climatic conditions within a team environment.
  • Work environment - 95% Outdoors year around.
  • Travel (Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts.)
  • Requires working within traffic conditions while utilizing traffic control measures as needed/warranted.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background: 

  • High school or GED with the ability to read, write and comprehend English (operational, process, safety and quality instructions) and the ability to interpret and record data.
  • Some vocational training and mechanical aptitude preferred, with the ability to read, interpret and record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, computer consoles and other equipment.
  • Prior work history in a related position with experience in a similar environment preferred, with working knowledge of the standard practices, common tools, materials, and occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Prior experience with industry related safety programs including but limited to confined space, lockout tagout, fall protection, etc.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

  • Must be able to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand maps (i.e. GIS maps)
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Must consistently demonstrate the ability to learn and independently perform assigned duties and meet or exceed production and quality goals.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
  • Requires data entry in a computerized management system.
  • Ability to work within sanitary sewer, storm water, and/or water distribution system.
  • Must be able to respond within 45 minutes to emergencies as needed.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training: 

  • Basic understanding of collection system operations in the form of Collections System Operator Certificate, Certification of NASCO’s Pipeline Assessment Certification Program (PACP) and Manhole Assessment Certification Program (MACP), OSHA ten-hour training, Traffic flagger certification.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT physical.
  • Collections system Operator preferred.
  • NASSCO PACP/MACP/LACP preferred.
  • Flagger Certification preferred.
  • DOT medical card preferred.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to work in various positions which require walking (70%), standing (10%), sitting (10%) and bending (10%) and to be able to lift and carry 60 pounds in standing and bending positions, and carry while walking distances of 10 feet.
  • Confined Space Entry - (i.e. pump station wet wells, tanks, manholes.)
