Pros

I have had a field engineering position, been a "Subject Matter Expert" in transmission HQ, and engineering roles in transmission planning. I would say that the SME and planning positions are quite interesting and challenging, and offer good experience. A field position can offer good overtime for hourly work, or comp time for engineers. Pay is good but not great. I find that some managers are better than others, but I have mostly been treated respectfully.

Cons

Some bureaucracy associated mainly with federal requirements, public engagement, transparency -- nothing unreasonable or me, but sometimes frustrating. Contractors are treated poorly with limited or no opportunity for advancement so if you want to stay long term, look for a permanent position to apply for and get out of contractor status ASAP. For "full time positions", the fastest way to move up the pay scale is to stay in grade for a year or so, and then apply for a different position in the next pay grade. Otherwise, climbing the "Step" increases is a slog with no real guarantee.
