Pros

The people are so great.

Cons

I wish it was international.

We cannot design for the human experience if we cannot be human. To serve every human individually and entirely, we need people that reflect the diversity of our communities. By leveraging that diversity, we create the conditions for an engaged, agile, and resilient workplace. The result is bigger ideas, bolder designs, and a better world. HMC has had a long-standing commitment to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of inclusion (JEDI). There are several areas in which HMC advances justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion including:

Firmwide Goals: HMC respects and celebrates our diverse pool of talent. As a firm, HMC is committed to promoting the equitable participation of all individuals at all levels of the organization. Diversity and inclusion are included in HMC’s annual firmwide goals.

Leadership: HMC created a dedicated position to advance JEDI and provides funding for the JEDI council activities.

Architecture and Design: HMC works to advance JEDI in its architecture and design practices.

Community Engagement and Partnerships: HMC expands access to architecture through its philanthropy and numerous nonprofit partnerships including the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA). Our team members participate in the HBCU mentorship program and HMC provides paid internships for HBCU students. HMC supports the SoCal NOMA Project Pipeline Summer Camp that trains the next generation of minority architects.

Philanthropy and Pro Bono Services: The HMC Designing Futures Foundation has invested $1.6 million in transformative nonprofits to invest in disadvantaged people and communities of color. HMC provides pro bono design services to nonprofits including the recently completed design of a STEM education in the Volta Region of Ghana.

Equitable Business Practices: A total of 45 percent of HMC’s consultant spending supports diverse and small businesses.

Employee Ownership: Employee-owned firms and Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP) have the power to reduce the wealth and racial equity gap. As a 100 percent employee-owned firm, our ESOP supports our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Compensation and Benefits: HMC conducts an annual diversity and pay equity report and shares the results, so all employee owners know where we stand. HMC is a majority-minority firm and pay equity by gender is almost at parity at 1.27 percent and by race is almost equal at .38 percent.

Education to support a culture of inclusion: HMC hosts ongoing firmwide JEDI education to build empathy, understanding, and cultural awareness including events to celebrate heritage months. The HMC Style Guide was maximized for accessibility, inclusion, legibility, and color blindness.
