Pros

Since day 1, Nextdoor has made me feel so welcomed and included even as a permanently remote employee. Everyone is so genuine and fun to work with, and my direct manager has been so supportive and helped me with my promotion. Highly recommended!

Cons

There are probably the normal growing pains such as lack of official processes that we will need to implement as the company scales, but nothing that's unusual.

Diverse communities are stronger communities.

At Nextdoor, we celebrate our similarities and our differences. To best serve our customers and build a product that truly empowers communities around the world, we are building a diverse team that reflects each community’s unique characteristics, and cultivating an inclusive environment where everyone can be seen and heard.

Our Commitment to Increasing Diversity

  • ERGs @ Nextdoor
    • Nextdoor has nine ERGs (and growing) focused on fostering a stronger sense of belonging and community at Nextdoor. ERGs are Employee Resource Groups that allow employees with commonalities to meet, support each other, and produce outcomes that help improve the business and job satisfaction. We believe in investing in our community of employees by creating a safe space to develop a passionate, collaborative and diverse team.
    • Learn more about our ERGs here!
  • Partnerships with communities
    • We currently have partnerships with several organizations, including dev/color, Adcolor and Lesbians Who Tech that are specifically focused on increasing representation of underrepresented minorities in the tech industry.
    • We have offered pro-bono advertising to organizations like NAACP, National Urban League, and several other organizations working to support racial and social equality.
  • Nextdoor Advisory Boards
    • In 2019, Nextdoor established three Advisory Boards consisting of a diverse group of academics, industry experts, and community leaders.
    • These experts advise on: building deeper connections between neighbors, the elements of thriving communities, and increasing civic engagement in neighborhoods around the world. Meet the experts on our advisory boards: https://about.nextdoor.com/team/#neighborhood
  • Employee Experiences
    • Nextdoor highlights and shares the experience of underrepresented groups in several ways.
    • Nextdoor regularly brings in leaders to share diverse perspectives into the organization. Speakers included Edith Cooper (Senior Director - Goldman Sachs), Helen Russell (CEO - Equator Coffee), Maverick Carter and Andre Iguadola (NBA), John Hope Bryant (CEO - Operation HOPE), Andrea Perez (Head of the Women’s and Kids Business for Brand Jordan - Nike), and many more.
    • Nextdoor celebrates commemorative months such as Black History Month, Womens’ History Month, Pride, and Ramadan with ERGs and employee events and communications.
  • Product Specific Initiatives
    • We have aligned the company around a singular objective of making Black neighbors feel safe and welcome on our platform.
    • Since 2015, we have been working with Dr. Jennifer Eberhardt, Department of Psychology Professor at Stanford University, on initiatives to reduce racism and bias on our platform.
    • In 2019, we launched the Kindness Reminder, a feature meant to encourage civility across the Nextdoor platform.

  • Invest in community
  • Customer obsessed
  • Think big

In order to build a product that truly empowers communities around the world, we need to understand their values, cultures, and traditions.

That's why we're working hard to build a diverse team that reflects each community’s unique characteristics and cultivating an inclusive environment where everyone can be seen and heard.

Employee-led resource groups (ERGs) like WIN (for female employees), BAND (for black employees), Rainbowhood (for LGBTQ employees), Parenthood (for parent employees), and Vecinos (for latinx employees) meet biweekly. Check out this blog to meet our ERGs!

Join our innovative, diverse, and welcoming team, and help us empower neighbors around the world. We're looking for software engineers, data scientists, marketers, and more! See open positions here!

Engineering

Build technology that cultivates a kinder world

At Nextdoor, we believe in the transformative power of community. You will be joining a team that is passionate about connecting neighbors and small to midsize bussines around the world, and contributing to an engineering culture that encourages collaboration, camaraderie and belonging.

We believe engineers should have a stake over all aspects of the product - from coming up with the next big ideas to build, all the way through understanding the impact of new features through rigorous data analysis.

Meet our Local Ecosystem Team at Nextdoor

Our mission is to build a local business platform that maximizes the value exchanged between neighbors and SMBs. As the neighborhood hub, we have a unique opportunity to foster meaningful connections between neighbors and the SMBs they love.

As part of this team, you will be playing a crucial role in defining, architecting, and building the systems and features that enable SMBs to join and participate in their Nextdoor communities.

Project Spotlight: The Kindness Reminder

When building new products at Nextdoor, our team incorporates solutions that are tech-driven and directly powered by our neighbors.

To encourage positivity, we created the Kindness Reminder. If a neighbor replies to a post with a potentially offensive or hurtful comment, the neighbor will be notified to reconsider their reply.

It uses machine learning based on information gathered from comments flagged by neighbors, and continues to learn the nuanced ways we can minimize incivility on our platform. Read more about the Kindness Reminder here.

Business

Build the neighborhood hub for trusted good, services, and connections.

Our business team is a driven and strategic group of neighbors who advocate for our advertisers, public agencies, members, and for one another.

The team culture mirrors the larger business focus, building trusted connections through transparency and kindness to cultivate a kinder world where everyone has a neighborhood and teammate they can rely on.

Team Spotlight: Local Team

At Nextdoor, we believe in the transformative power of community. We are a lean but powerful team — each of us have diverse perspectives because that’s what we seek out and respect in others.

We are on a mission to foster a strong community at Nextdoor, and by joining our team you will have the opportunity to directly impact the growth of our business.

Create partnerships that benefit neighborhoods and communities for good.

We have partnered with Clorox to encourage more caregiving across the country through Nextdoor's Help Map.

Some neighbors need help but don't know where to turn, while others want to help but don't know where to start.

Read more about the Help Map here.

Product

Develop a more welcoming, inclusive platform for everyone.

Serving and understanding our neighbors is at the heart of everything we do. This is especially important as we look to make our platform a welcoming place for everyone.

Our team of passionate designers, product managers, researchers, engineers, and data scientists are helping shape the future of the Nextdoor product as we continue to grow and provide neighbors with unique experiences that deliver on our purpose to cultivate a kinder world where everyone has a neighborhood they can rely on.

We believe Nextdoor can be the place where important conversations happen that build stronger neighborhoods.

External advisors play an important role in our company and our product, and in 2019 we established three advisory boards consisting of a diverse group of academics, industry experts, and community leaders. These experts advise on: building deeper connections between neighbors, the elements of thriving communities, and increasing civic engagement in neighborhoods around the world.

It starts with a wave.

Our new logo is inspired by you — our neighbors. It reflects the actions and gestures we see in neighborhoods every day. It starts with a wave. A wave is a universal gesture of connection. Waves build and grow. One wave leads to another. And another. Our Nextdoor Wave is both a warm welcome to all and a reminder that when we reach out to connect with those nearby, the possibilities are endless.
