1909 - When We Got Started

We'll take you back in time to 1909 to learn a bit about our incredible history. Let's start at the very beginning…

Pieter Christian Richard ("P.C.") was born in Amsterdam, Holland in 1880. On May 31, 1899, at 18 years old, he stepped off a 4,500-ton steamship and walked down the gangway to settle in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, NY in pursuit of the American Dream.

After delivering milk by horse and buggy, P.C. started a part-time home repair business of his own in Bensonhurst. Eventually, the business had grown so much that P.C. leveraged it into his own hardware store in 1909… and something else happened that year, too! P.C. and his wife, Odeila, gave birth to A.J. on October 11, 1909, the "Son" in P.C. Richard & Son.

A.J. grew up in the business. In fact, it's often said that A.J. was "born to sell" as he always had a deep passion for customer service. He spent time with his dad in the store at the age of four, and by the time he was seven, waited on customers after school and became an all-round hardware clerk. It's not surprising that he would later build the rock-solid foundation of P.C. Richard & Son.

Today & Beyond

We have 66 showrooms located in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, three distribution centers, and two service centers. Our online and showroom inventory has grown to be bigger and better than ever. Our growing selection includes categories such as appliances and housewares, TV and video, mattresses, home furnishings like recliners, home and portable audio, computers and tablets, video games, smart home, car audio, home office, and more. Our website showcases our growing selection of products. The virtual A.J. Richard Learning Center, filled with informative videos and blogs, was created to share product knowledge and guide customers through their purchase decisions.   Our showrooms have now incorporated Mattress Galleries with top brands such as Stearns & Foster, Sealy, and Tempur-Pedic, Mobile Installation Centers, Designer Appliance Centers, Apple Mac Computer Centers, and premium television displays. With these high-tech TV walls, customers can experience TV technologies with easy-to-use demonstrations that highlight features and benefits. Customers can put each model to the test with a tablet interface and quickly switch to a live broadcast with the touch of a button, seeing the differences between televisions in real time.  

We have also added interactive Smart Home Departments where customers can explore demos featuring the latest tech such as smart hubs, Wi-Fi thermostats, video doorbells, and much more. Our smart home experts are always available to answer our customers’ questions and help them find the perfect products for their home.

Everything we do is for our customers, and we stand behind every product we sell. Between deliveries, installation, appliance service, and electronic service, we're knocking on 5,000 customers' doors each day.
