When you choose to work in health care, you take an oath regarding the sanctity of all human life – and that a person’s gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or disability plays no role in the quality of care they receive. We pride ourselves in following the same principles when it comes to the people we hire.

At UNMH, our commitment to diversity in the workplace stems from the diverse population of the communities we serve across New Mexico. Through various employee resource programs and partnerships with numerous organizations, we’re able to provide an inclusive work environment for all of our employees, no matter their background. Read more below about some of our most prominent diversity initiatives.

White Coats for Black and Indigenous Lives

In May 2020, after the brutal murder of George Floyd, White Coats for Black and Indigenous Lives came together to refocus on their commitment to creating an anti-racist climate in health care and the workplace. The group is comprised of students, residents, physicians and staff from UNM School of Nursing, School of Medicine, and UNM Hospitals.

In light of the current climate, White Coats for Black and Indigenous Lives has committed to the following objectives to continue to create an anti-racist and inclusive environment.

  1. Mandatory anti-racism curricular for all academic programs that acknowledges and centers on histories of racism while examining other forms of systematic oppression.
  2. All trainees and students engage in health equity proficiencies, such as education that prepares our workforce to dismantle systematic racism at all levels of medicine and patient care.
  3. That UNM HSC and UNMH continue to recruit, hire, train, and cultivate a workforce that looks like New Mexico, and represents the diverse population we serve. We will continue working toward creating an infrastructure of equitable hiring practices to build, maintain and celebrate not only a faculty, but also a student body that reflects the population of New Mexico.
  4. A commitment to anti-racist programming that requires a commensurate commitment to compensating established and qualified leaders in the fields of anti-oppressive praxis and pedagogy in medical education.

LGBTQ Collaborative

UNM Hospitals is the only hospital network in New Mexico to have achieved recognition annually since 2013. This year marks the seventh consecutive year we’ve been recognized by the Human Rights Campaign as an LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader.

To further show our commitment to the community, we formed the UNM Health System LGBTQ Collaborative, an employee resource group that was created to support our mission and focus on the health and well-being of the diverse communities we serve, and works on initiatives that create an inclusive environment that supports LGBTQ, employees, patients, families and friends.

Founded in 2011, UNM Hospitals partners with multiple organizations such as the UNM LGBTQ Resource Center and the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico. The group conducts “Safe Zone” training several times throughout the year. These four-hour training courses educate staff and clinicians on how to be an ally to the community. It’s also an open forum for LGBT employees to speak out about any concerns they may have.

Navajo Working Group

New Mexico is the gateway to the 23 tribes, pueblos, and nations that have lived across the southwest for over 500 years. Their rich culture and history are what make us who we are today. Since opening our doors in 1954, we’ve always had a long-standing commitment to the Native American population in New Mexico.

We partner with UNMH faculty, UNM students, community groups and government agencies to develop sustainable solutions and pathways for improving the health and well-being of our indigenous population.

We also created our Navajo working group, which was formed to create a place where Native American employees can come together and discuss ways they can create a more inclusive environment for indigenous employees and patients.

If you’re looking for a work environment where differences are not only welcomed but encouraged – look no further. Explore career opportunities with us today and become a part of something great.

With our size and scope, you can choose from a broad range of disciplines and unique opportunities. No matter which area suits your interest and expertise, you’ll care for a diverse group of New Mexicans in a supportive academic medical center environment.

Our nurses go above and beyond for patients, displaying exceptional skill and passion. The day-to-day excellence of our team is one of the reasons why. In 2016, UNMH was one of only two recipients of the National Patient Safety Foundation DAISY Awards for Extraordinary Nurses. Join a state leader in nursing, and discover the support, recognition, and professional development opportunities you’ve been looking for.

Nursing Shared Governance

We value having a system that welcomes everyone into the decision-making process. Since 2004, we’ve employed shared governance, a structure that facilitates communication, encourages partnerships, promotes professional development, and recognizes each individual’s contributions.

RN Residency Program

Making the transition from nursing school to clinical practice at the bedside presents a whole host of challenges. Through mentorship and ongoing education, our Nurse Residency Program is designed to make it easier for you to do what you love—and ultimately to have a rewarding career in nursing.

You’ll be supported throughout your first year by our Nurse Residency Program Director, masters-prepared Nurse Educators, and clinically competent preceptors. We offer an evidence-based program with monthly educational courses and seminars that include didactic, high- and low-fidelity simulation, group discussion, research examination and other opportunities during the first year of hire. You’ll also complete an evidence-based practice project including a presentation.

We have four nurse residency groups a year: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Special New Graduate orientation occurs in January, April, June and September. All eligible nurses participate regardless of unit hiring or date hired. The actual hiring date will determine which group the new graduate will be placed in.

ICU Nursing

Make a Difference as an ICU RN

As New Mexico’s largest academic medical center, UNM Hospital has been at the forefront of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Our teams of doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and all other hospital staff have banded together to keep the communities we serve safe and healthy – and now we need your help.

To address the needs of our communities and patients during these difficult times, we currently have an immediate requirement for inpatient RNs in the following departments:

  • Pediatric ICU
  • Neuroscience ICU
  • Medical/Cardiac ICU
  • Trauma/Surgical ICU

We offer relocation reimbursement to both in and out of state candidates, as well as a generous Tuition Reimbursement program. You can earn your BSN or MSN with no work commitment and increase your hourly pay at the same time.

If you’re a registered nurse looking to work in an ICU environment at a nationally recognized leader in care, read more about our various intensive care units and find the opportunity that speaks to you.

Pediatric ICU

Our Pediatric ICU is a 20-bed unit staffed 24 hours a day by RNs and Patient Care Techs. We care for a wide range of patients, from infants to teenagers. A huge array of conditions and illnesses are treated, including respiratory failure, multi-system trauma, burns, post-interventional cardiac care, acute renal failure, shock, multi-systemic organ failure, sepsis, and many more.

We prefer candidates to have a minimum of one year of critical care experience working with pediatric patient population.

Neuroscience ICU

As a Neuroscience ICU RN at New Mexico’s only neurological and neurosurgical stroke unit, you will be collaborating with skilled physicians, and find your perspectives valued when treating patients who have brain and spinal injuries and other neurological conditions. The nurses on NSICU also participate and assist in Neurocritical care research, with implications to change medical and nursing practice nationwide.

Numerous education and training opportunities on the management of traumatic brain injuries, intracranial hemorrhages, ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, intracranial tumors, status epilepticus and more. Our RNs also receive training in the following areas:

  • Specialty training for devices used to care for patients requiring multimodality monitoring, including monitoring of ventricular intracranial pressure, parenchymal intracranial pressure, brain tissue oxygenation, and cerebral oximetry, and more
  • Specialty training for continuous renal replacement devices with consideration to the unique needs of the neurocritical care population
  • Training on devices used to detect and triage seizure activity that is nursing-driven and does not require traditional EEG
  • Training on intravascular and non-invasive targeted temperature management devices for thermoregulation
