Position Details
Information Technology and Security at The University of Tampa has an opening for an Academic Accessibility Technologist. The incumbent will streamline accessibility and compliance requirements, giving faculty a clear roadmap and actionable items to provide accessible content. This will require working with multiple others on campus, such as the Director of Distance Learning Support, the Faculty Instructional Technology Committee (ITC), and others as appropriate. This position reports directly to the Director of ITS Academic Solutions.

Responsibilities
  • The primary responsibility of the Academic Accessibility Technologist is to manage the learning management system (Canvas) accessibility tool (Ally) and the associated reporting, training, document creation, and remediation guidance related to digital educational documents.
  • Reporting
o Run institutional ALLY reports and provide information to relevant stakeholders..
o Audit overall compliance and develop plans for increasing awareness and compliance.
o Identify academic accessibility trends and devise remediation plans; courses with the most serious, or greatest number, of violations, etc.
  • Training
o Maintain currency in Section 508 and other accessibility standards and provide training to faculty and staff that support/create/edit content for academic programs and courses.
o Targeted training and remediation assistance for faculty/staff with students that have reported disabilities to Student Accessibility Services (SAS).
o Targeted training and remediation help for faculty/staff teaching courses that have the most serious violations, trending accessibility issues, etc.
o Ongoing faculty training in creating accessible documents based on current technology and applicable legislative requirements.
o New full-time faculty training each academic year and part-time faculty training each semester, in addition to programming during the academic year.
  • Template design
o Work with department chairs, directors, and course coordinators to develop templates for course documents that can be provided to all faculty (full or part-time) teaching specific courses.
o Develop accessible generic templates for syllabi, course outlines/schedules, rubrics, and other common course documents.
o Work with SAS to develop note-taking templates or other templates that can be used within SAS or provided to faculty for use when students have filed documentation with SAS.
  • Remediation
o Provide help and guidance for faculty as they remediate existing documents (e.g., PDFs, PowerPoints, etc.), especially more complicated documents, or for courses that have an extensive number of documents that the LMS accessibility tool (Ally) cannot handle automatically or need additional remediation.
  • Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.

Qualifications
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to assess business requirements.
  • Good understanding of Excel.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to communicate complex topics concisely.
  • Exceptional customer service skills with the ability to effectively interact with multiple stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn quickly The University of Tampa software programs such as Workday and Microsoft Office.
  • Willingness to embrace new technologies and innovative organizational practices.
Education and Experience
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree with a preference for Instructional Design
  • Experience with 508 compliance and use of accessibility testing tools, such as Ally

Summer - Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
