Reporting directly to the Cluster Manager and the department Chair and indirectly to the Assistant Dean, and with general direction, the Department Manager plans and directs all administrative functions of the assigned department in the School of Social Sciences, and its centers, and provides additional support to the Department cluster.
The Manager is tasked with analyzing needs, establishing short and long-range objectives and implementing effective organizational planning to meet instructional, research and programmatic goals of the department. Responsible for the management, strategic planning for - and leadership of - all administrative activities in the department, including fiscal management of departmental finance, payroll, academic/staff/student human resources, internal controls and contract & grant management. Oversees inventories of all departmental space and equipment, as well as their assignment, utilization and safety procedures.
The School of Social Sciences academic departments are divided into two clusters:
  • Language Science, Anthropology, Political Science, Economics and Logic and Philosophy of Science
  • Chicano-Latino Studies, Global and International Studies, Sociology and the program in Social Sciences
We are seeking highly motivated, effective leaders with demonstrated knowledge of academic and grant administration, to successfully manage the department’s faculty, staff, students, programs and initiatives in the following departments:
  • Economics
  • Political Science
  • Sociology

$75,000.00 - $100,000.00 (Annual Salary) Expected Pay Range within the Full Salary Range $71,300.00 - $128,700.00 (Annual Salary)
Required:
minimum of five years of experience in personnel or academic administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Thorough knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management. Interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills. Demonstrated analytical skills and knowledge of an academic department to independently problem-solve and to provide long-range planning on a wide variety of matters: budgetary, space, academic and staff personnel, instructional program development and implementation, research and computing support, etc. Solid knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs such as MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, KFS, Data Warehouse and other UC-specific business systems. Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality. Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service. Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, and / or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees. Proven experience performing fiscal and budgetary planning and analysis for all funds and activities in the department to include operational and academic support and pre-award contracts and grants support functions. Ability to perform effectively and efficiently with frequent interruptions, fluctuating workloads and competing needs of students, staff, and faculty. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with the campus community both verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, students and visitors. Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment and to develop lasting working relationship.
