Job Summary:
The Integrative Medicine Registered Nurse (RN) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center provides holistic patient care, focusing on pain management and alternative therapies. This role emphasizes patient education, family involvement in care plans, and integration of alternative medicine techniques such as yoga, meditation, and touch therapy. The RN will also support government employees during clinical procedures and take part in quality assurance functions and educational programs for both staff and patients.
Duties and Responsibilities:
**Patient Care and Education:**
- Teach patients proper self-care techniques and motivate both patients and their families to engage in healing practices.
- Provide direct, hands-on patient care, with approximately 80% of time focused on patient interaction and 20% on education and meetings related to Integrative Medicine.
- Carry out treatment recommendations from Pain and Integrative Medicine physicians.
- Educate staff and patients on alternative medicine and self-care, such as yoga, meditation, and other modalities aimed at improving well-being.
**Clinical and Administrative Support:**
- Support hospital corpsmen, technicians, medical students, and resident physicians during clinical procedures, ensuring adherence to professional standards and protocols.
- Perform administrative duties such as maintaining statistical records of clinical workload, maintaining patient medical records, and assisting with documentation and reporting.
- Participate in meetings to review patient care, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Contribute to clinic quality assurance functions, including Performance Improvement (PI) and Risk Management (RM) programs, and support clinic orientations and annual training requirements.
**Program and Educational Support:**
- Support the National Capital Region Pain Initiative’s (NCRPI) Annual Pain Care Skills Training and other training events, including instruction on integrative medicine techniques.
- Participate in educational programs and assist in developing training materials related to pain management and alternative medicine.
- Attend and participate in command orientations, completing required training on topics such as infection control, safety, and customer relations.
**Flexibility and Special Projects:**
- Be available for occasional after-hours or weekend meetings and training events as required by the program.
- Learn and apply new integrative medicine techniques as appropriate, contributing to the growth and success of the Integrative Medicine Program.
Required Qualifications:
**Education:**
- Bachelor’s certification as a Registered Nurse (RN) from a National League of Nursing (NLN)-approved program.
**Licensure/Certification:**
- Valid, unrestricted RN license from any U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth.
- Valid certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
**Continuing Education:**
- Certified in at least two alternative medicine treatments relevant to pain management (e.g., yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, massage therapy, touch therapy) and able to educate patients on pain management techniques and self-care skills.
**Experience:**
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in pain management or a related field, or training in at least two alternative modalities for pain management.

**Communication and Customer Service:**
- Strong communication and customer service skills with the ability to effectively interact with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
- Proficiency in English (both written and spoken) to communicate effectively in a medical environment.
**Technical and Medical Knowledge:**
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
- Desirable knowledge of medical disorders, diagnostic studies, and treatments related to both chronic and acute pain.
- Ability to teach patients proper self-care techniques and motivate them to continue their healing practices.
**Flexibility and Adaptability:**
- Willingness to learn new integrative medicine techniques and adapt to the needs of the program and patient care.
