Job Summary:
The Pain Physician-Anesthesiologist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) provides comprehensive Anesthesiologist Interventional Pain Management services for the Chronic Pain Clinic. This position involves supporting active-duty military personnel, veterans, and their families, delivering specialized pain management care, and conducting educational sessions for residents and medical students. The physician will work closely with the anesthesia team and may be assigned duties across multiple sites in the National Capital Area (NCA).

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Provide comprehensive anesthesiologist interventional pain management services for the Chronic Pain Clinic at WRNMMC.
- Serve as an Anesthesiologist providing care and support services to medical staff, support staff, inpatients, and outpatients.
- Educate and mentor residents, medical students, and nurse anesthetists, integrating with other military anesthesia services in the National Capital Area (NCA).
- Provide anesthesia and pain management services at additional NCA sites as directed by the Chief of Anesthesia, including the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) and Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center.
- Treat active-duty military personnel, including combat casualties, eligible family members, civilian employees, and other eligible beneficiaries.
- Serve as an instructor at the National Capital Region Pain Initiative’s (NCRPI) Annual Pain Care Skills Training for up to three full days, which may occur outside of the National Capital Region.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team, demonstrating excellent customer service.
- Assist with special pain management projects and uphold quality care standards.
- Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and creative problem-solving abilities.
- Maintain a commitment to high-quality care, ensuring compliance with Joint Commission (JC) guidelines.
- Participate in pain management program meetings and address any operational needs.
- Perform duties outside of regular hours for program needs, including meetings or training events.

Required Qualifications:

**Education:**
- Doctorate Degree in Medicine from an accredited college approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association, or a Doctorate Degree in Osteopathy from an accredited college, or permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

**Licensure/Certification:**
- Completed an ACGME-recognized fellowship in pain medicine (minimum of 12 months) and obtained subspecialty certification in Pain Medicine within two years of completing the fellowship.
- Board certification in anesthesiology from the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). If initially certified before January 2000, must be enrolled in the ABA Maintenance of Certification program and have voluntarily recertified since then.
- Board eligibility or certification in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
- Unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number (Maryland state license required for this position).
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and other certifications such as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) as required.
- Must represent an acceptable malpractice risk.

**Experience:**
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in pain management or a related field.
- At least one (1) year of experience in interventional pain management, including advanced techniques such as epidural injections under fluoroscopy, discography, spinal cord stimulator trials, and ganglion blocks.
- Experience in multi-disciplinary pain management for a minimum of one year within the last three years.
- At least one (1) year of experience teaching anesthesia residents interventional pain management techniques within the last four years.

Other Qualifications:
- Proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English to effectively communicate with patients and healthcare providers.
- Strong knowledge of medical equipment and the ability to use necessary supplies properly.
- Capable of teaching patients self-care and motivating them and their families to continue care procedures.
- Possess knowledge and skills to provide care for patients of all ages, understanding the principles of growth and development.
- Proficiency in basic word processing, data entry, and automated medical records systems, including Microsoft Office and Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
- Exemplary customer service and communication skills.
- Knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders and treatments related to chronic and acute pain is highly desirable.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.

This role is essential to providing specialized pain management care at WRNMMC, supporting patient recovery, and contributing to the education of future healthcare providers.
