We are a nonprofit, donor-supported organization that has raised and invested billions of dollars to help develop cystic fibrosis therapies that have changed the lives of people with this disease. Nearly every CF medicine available today was made possible because of Foundation support.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The CF Foundation is preparing for the next leap in how we serve the CF community of patients, care givers, care providers, and researchers with our Patient Registry. We have an ambitious vision for this next CFF patient data ecosystem: Linking medical records to many sources of additional data (e.g., claims, pharmacy, census, clinical trials, genetic, wearables, patient reported outcomes, national surveys) while providing patients with the power to control what is shared and with whom; welcoming flexibility and building a new architecture that will leverage the opportunities the next decade will bring in healthcare and technology solutions.

The Application Developer V is the lead architect responsible for designing and implementing the technical arm of this ambitious vision. Architecture, tech stack, security and access management, data models, APIs, ETL, DevOps; this expert will make essential design decisions on all. They will help us build the team of developers and vendors best suited for the task and lead them by example in modern best practices. Together, we will make sure patients get the best care, clinicians get the best support, and scientists get the fastest output that is possible with the data.
This position will work closely with the Head of Data Science. This is a hybrid role based in Bethesda, MD, and requires 2-3 days per week in the Bethesda office.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversees the development of all areas of applications architectures and programs.
  • Performs requirements analysis and design with project leads, business analysts, and internal customers.
  • Collaborates with key business stakeholders, developers, and lead data engineers to develop core data architecture and processes.
  • Documents work/code including and not limited to process workflows and architecture diagrams.
  • Designs, codes, tests, debugs, and documents applications at the highest levels of complexity.
  • Implements and administers security for both in-house and commercial off-the-shelf applications.
  • Develops and maintains data integrations with 3rd parties for CFF.
  • Troubleshoots technical issues and demonstrates ability to drive to successful resolution.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Applied Mathematics or related field.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience with applications development and DevOps. Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • Superb ability to implement solutions using effective and innovative methodologies
  • Superb analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Superb ability to learn new skills and technologies as needed.
  • Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming method.
  • Superb oral and written communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients.
  • Ability to work independently and manage own time.
  • Ability to estimate the level of effort for teamwork or vendor work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - HIGHLY DESIRED:
  • Cloud computing architectures.
  • Previous experience working in a non-profit environment.
  • Previous experience working with electronic medical records, ontologies, and interoperability standards, e.g., FHIR, OMOP.
  • Experience working with large amounts of Data and building Data pipelines
  • API design.
  • Automated testing, continuous integration/deployment.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Reports to the Application Development Manager. No direct reports.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s national office is located in Bethesda, MD. Hybrid or fully remote schedule is optional based on location. Candidates located in the MD, VA, DC region are eligible for a hybrid schedule. Candidates located anywhere in the US outside of the MD, VA, or DC region are eligible for fully remote work.
  • Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature.
  • No heavy lifting required.
  • Minimal travel (e.g., 4x/yr.) to conferences and meetings, as necessary.

The salary range is $120,150 to $182,500. Specific salary varies based on geographic location and is commensurate with experience.
