Arborist

Primary duty is planning, planting, and maintaining the college's trees and woody shrubs.

Anticipated Salary Range: $19.25 to $23.88 per hour

Responsibilities:
  • Independently perform daily tree maintenance including the removal of dead or undesirable limbs, pruning and trimming of tree limbs, determining the appropriate seasonal timing for both tree and shrub maintenance activities to include irrigation, soil amendment mitigation, and new planting implementation plans.
  • Ensure the condition of all campus trees meet prudent safety considerations for facilities, pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Manage all campus tree and shrub projects including design and budget; make cost estimates of time and material.
  • Identify and diagnose diseases and insect infestation and apply proper treatment.
  • Implement and manage the campus GIS mapping system to include electronic mapping of all trees, gardens, trash receptacles, benches, bike racks, walkways, irrigation systems and memorials.
  • Collaborate with the Horticulturist and assist other Grounds staff in planting and shrub bed designs for all campus annual and perennial flower and shrub beds.
  • Provide leadership in developing new campus tree and shrub bed landscape plans in accordance with the Campus Master Plan, DRB input, current maintenance conditions, and new capital projects; collaborate with campus constituents to ensure plantings will be appropriate for spaces used.
  • Utilize GIS mapping to maintain an active campus inventory of all trees and shrubs to include the date of planting, species, and current condition/health and any treatment or mitigation plans.
  • Assist in providing training, work direction and problem-solving assistance for staff and student workers; supervise all tree/shrub planting, maintenance and removal operations and coordinate with contractors.
  • Serve as a resource for all campus constituents to include classroom instruction, tours, workshops, and demonstrations; proactively explore other opportunities to provide specialized information.



Additional Responsibilities:
o Actively support the colleges plan to be an antiracist institution by understanding, engaging with, and promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity in the college community.
o Promote a culture of safety and environmental protection by working in a safe manner; immediately reporting unsafe
situations and accidents; following college procedures; and participating in appropriate safety training.
o Demonstrate environmental sustainability by using college resources wisely and supporting the colleges sustainability
initiatives and innovation.
o Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
High school graduate plus a minimum of three years of related experience; valid motor vehicle operators license and insurable to operate both vehicles and grounds equipment; certified Arborist in accordance with the International Society of Arborculture (ISA) within five years of hire; knowledge of grounds maintenance practices; specific knowledge of tree, shrub, and plant care, preparation, and maintenance; experience with potable and non-potable irrigation systems; knowledge of grounds-specific occupational hazards and routine safety equipment and operations; ability to read, interpret, and work from rough sketches, schematic drawings, and blueprints; excellent oral and written communication skills to convey technical, budget, and project schedule information concisely and completely; proficient in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and basic business math; ability to think critically and solve problems; ability to communicate effectively and develop positive relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds; good judgment and ability to handle sensitive information with discretion; excellent organizational and customer service skills; ability to operate standard office equipment; ability to operate small hand tools, basic gardening tools, trucks and tractors, front-end loader, backhoe, mowers, weed eaters, 80-pound jackhammer, edgers, chain saws, aerators, rototillers, etc. Physical requirements include heavy physical effort (usually lifting/moving up to 100 pounds); ability to stand, walk, reach, grasp, stoop, kneel, bend, crawl, crouch, carry, push and/or pull; climb stairs, ladders and/or scaffolds; carry loads up and down stairs; must work outdoors in all weather conditions; exposure to noise/dusty conditions; chemicals and solvents, mechanical, electrical and/or other hazards.

Preferred Qualifications:
Both grounds and specific tree and shrub maintenance experience to include irrigation, site work, snow removal, and working with teams; proficient with computer software programs such as TMA (WMMS); knowledge of ARCH GIS online.
