Job Overview

The Assistant Director of Intramural Sports & Events is responsible for the overall planning, direction and facilitation of the Intramural Sports program and large departmental events, including development, strategy and achievement of short- and long-term goals that support and enhance the mission, vision and values of Campus Recreation and the University. The Assistant Director has primary oversight of program development, student engagement, and student staff development for all programmatic areas, budget and capital planning and reconciliation, risk management and direct supervision of full-time staff. Within the main programmatic areas of Intramural Sports and Events, the Assistant Director has oversight of year-round season/sport planning, league development and facility/space scheduling for semester and summer leagues, tournaments, educational clinics and training. Additionally, the Assistant Director will be responsible for the development and management of departmental events and support of campus wide events such as student orientation, welcome week, homecoming and other student centric events. Event duties include creation, planning, staff leadership and mentoring, budget tracking and all aspects of event communication.


A vital component of this position is a demonstrated ability to work autonomously with initiative, critical and creative thinking, as well as a strong commitment to student development, collaboration, and customer service. Additionally, this position has financial, administrative and personnel responsibilities and will serve on departmental committees and work teams.


This position includes the ability for a hybrid work schedule with up to a 20% work from home option.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and achieve short- and long-term planning, strategy and goals that achieve the mission and vision and of intramural sports, events and the department.
  • Provide direction and leadership to full-time professional staff in Intramural Sports and Events.
  • Provides both direction and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approval of time off, etc.)
  • Identify and provide Intramural Sports, clinics, and/or education that are of interest to a growing and diverse student population.
  • Develop and update individual sport officials training and rules per sport including, but not limited to, basketball (5v5, 3v3), flag football (7v7, 4v4), volleyball (6v6, 4v4), soccer (11v11, 7v7), softball, ultimate frisbee, futsal, dodgeball, kickball, wallyball, tennis, racquetball, spikeball, and pickleball.
  • Develop intramural sports leagues, tournaments, and special events. Create and publish schedules and playoff brackets.
  • Create and deliver captain and player expectations for all IM opportunities and conduct player disciplinary meetings.
  • Develop and facilitate inter and intra departmental events including, but not limited to, student orientation, welcome week, homecoming and other student centric events. Conduct full planning, facilitation, staff oversight and budget projections/reconciliation and event evaluations.
  • Provide fiscal development and oversight in achieving intramural sports, event and department’s operating budgets. Develop and monitor monthly, quarterly and annual financial targets for revenue and expense budgets.

Essential Functions Continued

  • Establish program fees and charges, prepare purchase requests, payroll, and financial reports.
  • Coordinate program facility needs. Oversee equipment purchase, rental and replacement.
  • Create and implement marketing plans and materials including website updates.
  • Coordinate area specific assessment efforts, reports, participation data development and analysis; formulate, recommend, approve and implement policies, procedures, controls, and manage processes to advance service levels and improve efficiencies.
  • Assume lead or assist in various department responsibilities related to emergency action plan preparation and execution, safety/risk management, marketing, student development, and special events.
  • Facilitate ongoing, comprehensive training and development of staff. Ensure required certifications are earned and maintained.
  • Serve as liaison to internal departments, external entities and community organizations and work to develop partnerships to enhance the student experience and reach groups with traditionally low participation in Campus Recreation programs.
  • Serve on various university, division and departmental committees and represent the department among various state and national associations.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Trainings/Certifications

American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers with First Aid certification. Must be certified within six (6) months of employment.

Required Experience

  • Three (3) years of relevant experience including a minimum of one (1) year supervision experience.
  • Experience training, developing, and evaluating sport officials and supervisors.
  • Experience working with event or special event programming.
  • Ability to work weekends and evening hours, including outdoors.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers with First Aid Instructor certification. Must be certified within six (6) months of employment.
  • Strong knowledge of sport rules and experience in officiating several sports including, but not limited to, flag football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and softball.
  • Officiating certifications at the state level.
  • Knowledge of various related systems including IMLeagues, CSI, SubItUp, C2C, Canva, Microsoft Office.
  • Proven commitment to student/staff development Demonstrated ability to take to identify problems, assess alternatives, render consistent and logical decisions.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment that values high expectations, accountability, and balanced lifestyles.
